How to use Acrobat's Search feature

NOTE: this Search feature will only work when using version 8 (or higher) of either Adobe® Reader® or Adobe® Acrobat®, click on the link below to download Adobe® Reader® for free.
This product will NOT WORK with other PDF viewing software such as Preview.

To download Adobe® Reader® click on the following link :http://get.adobe.com/reader/

Your system will be recognized and the correct version for your operating system will be determined (Mac or PC) by Adobe®.


Navigate to the location where you downloaded and extracted the Ever Upward files from the steps above, where you will see the following contents.

Look for a file called “Index.pdx” and double click on this file.

Once this file opens (this file should open with either Adobe® Reader® or Adobe® Acrobat®) you will be presented with a screen which looks like this:

Type in the word or phrase you would like to search for into the box. Select the options that will narrow or broaden the search to suit your needs such as case sensitive and/or whole words only.

Note:multiple word searches may take much longer to complete. This will be somewhat dependant on the hardware specifications of your computer.

Ensure:that the radio button: “In the index named Index.pdx” is selected. Otherwise you may not receive and results for your intended search.
Once your search is complete, you will see a detailed list of the results. These results will be ordered by relevance of your search terms. The year of the published CAJ will be shown, and will have the results listed below it for that publication year.

Click the + beside the publication year you are interested in to see the word with parts of the sentence or caption it appears in. If you click on any of these results, you will be taken to the page and Canadian Alpine Journal publication year that correspond to the result.

To begin a new search, simply click on the “New Search” button to continue.

Note: The first search may take some time to load once you have clicked on a result, depending upon your computer hardware; subsequent searches will be significantly faster.


To view individual Canadian Alpine Journal publications WITHOUT performing a search with the “Index.pdx” file, navigate to the folder where your files were extracted (see above) and double click on the file named “EverUpward.pdf”

Note: The time required to open this file may vary depending on your computers’ hardware. Once you have opened the EverUpward.pdf file you may view an individual year by clicking on its title, found in the window pane on the left side of the window.
