Ecuador

Ecuador is a beautiful country that is home to some of the world’s highest volcanoes. The climbing objectives on this expedition will include Imbaura (4609m), Yanaourco (4535m), Cotopaxi (5897m/19,355’) and Chimborazo (6311m/20,700’). Our trip will start in the charming capital city of Quito from where we will move north to Otavallo and the start of our first trek. Our acclimatization trek takes us to the scenic Cotacachi– Cayapas Nature reserve and the volcanoes of Imbaura (4609) and Yanourco (4535).  All peaks will be staged from alpine refuges.  This five-day journey will prepare us for the higher summits we will subsequently attempt.  There will be a glacier skills review before we climb Cotapaxi, a beautifully symmetrical and glaciated peak. Finally we will challenge ourselves with Chimborazo, over 6000m and the highest in Ecuador.

Level of Difficulty

Previous high altitude climbing experience is not required to participate in this camp.  This is a good opportunity to experience high altitude mountaineering with easy access and relatively non-technical summits. However, climbing days will be demanding, with long days at elevations between 5000m and 6500m. Ascents are mostly on snow and ice with many easy and moderate climbs.  Glacier travel and snow climbing experience are beneficial. A good level of fitness is needed, as you will be climbing for 5-8 hours a day with a 9-12 kg (20-25 lb) pack over snow, ice and rock. Porters will assist with carrying group gear to reduce the amount of weight participants need to carry.
