Leadership Training – 100 years of teaching mountaincraft

The North Face has been a supportive sponsor of the Leadership Courses since their inception and we thank them for their assistance.

Mountain leadership development is a mandate of The Alpine Club of Canada. Hundreds of amateur leaders volunteer their time at both the Section and National levels to ensure that other ACC members have a safe and enjoyable time in the mountains.

The North Face - Alpine Club of Canada Leadership Courses are designed to provide advanced training for the Club's section trip leaders, GMC amateur rope leaders, and national camp managers. These courses are aimed at ACC members who already have considerable climbing, mountaineering and/or ski mountaineering experience, have taken some related courses, and are active amateur leaders. Members who wish to attend are asked to submit an application form and letters of reference. Participant fees are subsidized, and a commitment for a return to the Club in volunteer energy will be sought from all members who attend.

How to Qualify: Join the ACC and sign up for some of the hundreds of free trips offered by the regional Sections. Once you have attended a few trips and have become acquainted with some of the trip leaders and the style of trips that are led, you can apply to become a volunteer Section trip leader. Most Sections offer free or subsidized mountain leadership training for their leaders. After you have proven yourself as a good, reliable, safety-conscious leader, you can apply to attend one of The North Face-Alpine Club of Canada Leadership courses.

Other Training Courses: If you do not yet meet the qualifications for the TNF-ACC courses, we recommend that you consider signing up for one of our other mountain training courses such as:

All Alpine Club of Canada camps also provide a significant level of mountain training.

Karl Nagy Memorial Award

Information and Application package:  Word Document

The deadline for applications is: January 31.

The Karl Nagy Memorial Award was established in 2001 to assist aspiring amateur leaders and guides in the development of their leadership and people skills. Until his death in 2000, Karl set an outstanding example as a mentor in the mountains and was well known for his leadership, safety and success. Karl was admired and loved for his exuberant attitude in the mountain environment that he played and worked in.

This award is intended to provide an opportunity to ACMG candidates and/or ACC aspiring amateur leaders to develop their leadership skills and abilities within the ACC General Mountaineering Camp (GMC) environment. All applicants must be current members of the Alpine Club of Canada. In the years designated for aspiring guides, applicants must also have passed one or more of the following exams: assistant rock guide, assistant alpine guide or assistant ski guide.

The Karl Nagy Memorial Award Selection Committee will select one applicant to attend a week of the GMC to observe and assist current guides and amateur leaders. While there is no monetary value to the award, the recipient will gain invaluable and unique leadership experience. ACC amateur leaders and ACMG candidates will be given priority in alternating years. The year 2010 is set for an ACC amateur leader.
