Is the weather in the mountains important to you? Do you want to understand what is going to happen exactly when and where it matters to you? This year we’re offering a course on weather that is particular to a mountain environment.

The Mountain Weather Course provides a firm understanding of basic meteorology, technical interpretation of internet resources, practical observations and forecasting techniques in the field. In practical terms, you’ll learn to make weather-dependant decisions before the trip as well as when you’re in the field. Additionally, you’ll get afrm grasp of weather patterns in British Columbia and Alberta and be able to use a huge array of publicly available tools such as satellite and radar imagery, weather charts, weather observations.

Held at the ACC Clubhouse in Canmore, this course is classroom based with a mixture of exercises, theory and many anecdotal and outside examples. We’ll use a vast number of internet resources and go through a real time weather analysis and forecast. We will be working continuously on the internet to check current weather and conduct exercises, so bring your own internet capable laptop if you have one!

Level of Difficulty

While there are no prerequisites for this course, you should have had some experience with watching the weather and trying to make mountaineering decisions based on weather reports and forecasts.
