Who doesn’t dream of taking a giant step in their technique, radically improving their skills, or learning the secrets of the great climbers? Maybe the first step is just moving out of the gym onto real rock?

Come join us for a chance to try it all, with super-elite climbers Sonnie Trotter and Rob Owens. This climbing camp is designed especially for young climbers - it will cover the gamut of climbing styles from indoor gym, to outdoor sport, to multi-pitch cragging protected with trad gear. We will have access to some of the best climbing routes in Canada from our base in Canmore.

Each day will be spent reviewing movement techniques, routefinding, gear placement, and leading all while climbing some fantastic lines in incredible situations. This week offers climbers aged 17 – 24 the chance to climb with and learn the secrets from some of Canada's cutting edge guides and climbers, including Sonnie Trotter - one of the world's strongest crack climbers, ACMG guide and multiple first-ascentionist Rob Owens, and competition climbing guru David Dornian.

Level of Difficulty

This camp is designed for climbers between the ages of 17 and 24 with some indoor or outdoor climbing experience and basic rope-handling skills.  You must have a good level of fitness and be willing to carry up to a 10kg (20lb) pack to get to some routes.

"Climbing is freedom" says Sonnie Trotter (29) of Squamish, BC. "I love the freedom of movement without coaches or rules, freedom to travel, freedom to explore and the whole time living it all under open skies."

Sonnie Trotter is one of if the most accomplished free climbers in the world. He has been grappling rocks and setting standards since he was 16 years old - has over 12 years of experience under his belt. When not climbing the worlds hardest routes, Sonnie can be found at home in Squamish BC, looking for possible first ascents and rock guiding on the Stawamus Chief.

Sonnie is a certified assistant rock guide through the ACMG. He is also an accomplished writer, photographer and product developer - basically, anything that has to do with climbing and mountain life. After spending nearly two years in Canmore, Sonnie moved back to the coast for the world class granite, but says he will always be drawn to the majestic rocky mountains.

"Climbing and it's community have given me so much and allowed me to live such a rich existence, that I feel honored to be able to share my passion and my experience with others. I hope my guiding can have a positive impact.

Camp Manager David Dornian

David Dornian

David Dornian has managed Canada’s national mountain-sports teams for more than ten years. He has studied with climbing coaches and training programs from Russia, Spain, France, England, and Germany, and at one time or another has written about sport climbers, alpinists, trips, routes, and gear for most of the major outdoor magazines in North America.

From his long-time home in Calgary, David has grown up climbing in the front ranges of Alberta, Banff NP, and Western Canada, while simultaneous spending all of his money visiting famous climbing destinations around the world. He still thinks the Bow Valley is pretty special, and has contributed to guidebooks, festivals, competition programs, and the cloud of dust that hangs over gravel roads throughout the area.
