This backcountry climbing camp is aimed at young-at-heart climbers who are looking for moderate mountaineering routes with daily trekking options. This year’s camp will take you to the legendary Fairy Meadow Hut in the heart of the Adamant Range of the Selkirk Mountains. The peaks in the area are mainly granitic and there are several classic routes of various lengths and difficulty to challenge all types of climbers.
The Bill Putnam (Fairy Meadow) Hut is spectacularly located in a grassy meadow close to the Granite Glacier, providing access to a wide range of objectives including Mts. Adamant 3366 m(11,040’) and Austerity 3348 m(10,980’). The granite in this area is excellent, the glaciers exciting, and the peaks present many varied challenges.
We’ll spend our days summiting peaks and spend our evenings spinning yarns in the comforts of the Hut. As an added bonus, this camp is fly in and fly out, so no multi-day packs to carry along endless logging roads. You’ll arrive at the hut ready to get out and climb!
If you are over 55 and seeking company and challenges with others in this age range, this camp is for you.

An avid climber, hiker, and skier, Ferdl started climbing in his native Austria, where he originally became a mountain guide. After immigrating to Canada he was initially employed by Canadian Mountain Holidays and is a past instructor for the ACMG. He first guided for the Alpine Club of Canada at our GMC at Lake O'Hara in 1968. Fluent in English, German and Spanish, his guiding career has taken him to Europe, Canada and Mexico. He has a variety of first ascents to his credit in both Austria and the Canadian Rockies. In addition to being a guide, he is also a geologist - he likes to study rock formations from near and far and explain the geology of the area to interested guests. |

Dave is a happily transplanted Nova Scotian who hasn't been able to tear himself very far away from the mountains. After a career in public school education in Saskatchewan, Dave and his newly-retired wife moved to the West Kootenays to build a new house and explore one of the premier recreational areas in Canada. Dave was a member of the Saskatchewan Section executive and ACC Board member for many years and is still active in leading Section trips and working on National Camps each summer. |
