Starbird Range |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Starbird Range is home to some seldom-visited granite pinnacles that are reminiscent of the legendary spires found in the Bugaboos. Located SE of the Bugaboos in the Southern Purcells, the Starbird Range offers a variety of esthetically beautiful climbing routes to challenge us throughout the week. From our basecamp at treeline in a small tarn at the head of Welsh Creek, situated at the point on the Starbird Range where secondary ridges branch out to the Scotch, Welsh and Irish Peaks, our objectives for the week will be the highest peaks in the region: Gwendoline (3149m/10331ft), North Star (3123m/10246ft), with other options in the area that include Alpha Centauri, Carmarthen, Glamorgan and Black Fang. After meeting in Radium, BC, we’ll drive up a logging road before hiking the rest of the way into the area and setting up our basecamp. This is the perfect location for general mountaineering-style climbing in an area that has no shortage of interesting climbing on beautiful granite.
