The world renowned Columbia Icefield is home to
eight of the highest peaks in the Canadian Rockies and makes a fantastic
base camp for this week-long ski mountaineering camp. Taking advantage
of the longer days and deeper snow pack of spring, we will approach the
Columbia Icefield from the Icefields Parkway and establish our base camp
high on the icefield. A food cache placed high on the glaciers will help
lighten the loads for the ski in to camp.
The rest of the week will be
spent attempting to climb and ski as many of the peaks in the area as
possible. Mt. Columbia, North Twin, South Twin, Snow Dome, Kitchener,
Stutfield, and Andromeda – all over 3353m (11000ft) – offer excellent
ski mountaineering routes to their summits and enjoyable turns on the
way home.
This camp is a peak-bagger’s dream come true!
Level of Difficulty
All members of the party must have previous
ski mountaineering and glacier skiing experience, and have
a high level of fitness. All camping, cooking gear (ropes,
tents, stoves, fuel, etc) and food will be provided and weight
will be shared between party members. Each participant must
have ski equipment in good condition with which they are
well experienced. Participants must be comfortable traveling
long distances with a backpack weighing up to 20kg (45lb). |

Conrad arrived
in Canmore AB for a mountaineering course in 1994 and got completely
hooked on all forms of mountain adventures. After completing
a Kinesiology degree at the University of Calgary, he moved back
to the mountains and began guiding, climbing and skiing full
time. Conrad feels fortunate that he has been able to explore
many different places in North America as a result of this path
- from a start leading trips on the West Coast Trail, to guiding
canoeing in Minnesota and the North West Territories, to more
recently guiding climbing and skiing trips throughout the mountain
ranges of B.C., Alberta and up north into the St. Elias. Some
highlights for him have been guiding more remote ski traverses,
and a recent trip up Mt. Logan in the Yukon. Conrad’s perfect
world includes an endless winter, a whole bunch of maps and food,
and a pair of skis - this would make him about as happy as you
can imagine! Conrad is based out of Banff where he lives with
his wife Coralee. |
