The Alpine Club of Canada is taking a group of lucky
skiers into Kokanee Glacier Cabin for a prime week of powder skiing in
2010.
Situated in Kokanee Glacier Provincial Park in the Selkirk Mountains,
Kokanee is a backcountry skier’s paradise, where deep powder is the norm,
not the exception. A variety of skiing is available including short runs
right outside the door, longer tours, tree skiing, and long slopes that
will have your quads burning. There’s plenty of terrain to keep everyone
busy for the week.
Meeting in Nelson BC, we’ll fly by helicopter into
Kokanee Glacier Cabin for 7 nights, spending our days discovering for
ourselves why so many people want to experience this skiing mecca. Our
enviable task for the week will be to ski the most lines in the deepest
powder that our legs will allow!
At the end of the day, this incredibly
comfortable, spacious hut with large comfy living room will provide a
place for trading tall tales. There’s plenty of elbow room at the kitchen
tables and a beautiful bathroom to shower up in at the end of the day.
Kokanee is only available in a lottery system – if you’ve dreamed of
going to this world-class destination but have never been one of the
lucky few to get a week in the lottery, this is a very rare opportunity
to get one spot at this coveted backcountry lodge.
Level of Difficulty
The strong, experienced skier will enjoy
and be challenged by a week of skiing in the area. Kokanee
Glacier Cabin is not for beginners! An advanced level of
fitness and high-intermediate to advanced downhill ski abilities
are essential. This means being comfortable skiing ‘black
runs’ with a 7-9 kg (15-20 lb) pack in backcountry
snow conditions, especially deep powder! For those individuals
who live at lower elevations (less than 1000m/3300’),
we recommend that you arrive in the mountains a few days
before the camp, to do some skiing on your own and acclimatize
to our altitude. This camp involves living at and above 2050m/6800’ for
the whole week.
Due to the hut-based nature of the camp,
everyone will be able to get as much skiing in as they like.
You will be able to choose between short or long days, or
days of complete relaxation in the hut. |

Conrad arrived
in Canmore AB for a mountaineering course in 1994 and got completely
hooked on all forms of mountain adventures. After completing
a Kinesiology degree at the University of Calgary, he moved back
to the mountains and began guiding, climbing and skiing full
time. Conrad feels fortunate that he has been able to explore
many different places in North America as a result of this path
- from a start leading trips on the West Coast Trail, to guiding
canoeing in Minnesota and the North West Territories, to more
recently guiding climbing and skiing trips throughout the mountain
ranges of B.C., Alberta and up north into the St. Elias. Some
highlights for him have been guiding more remote ski traverses,
and a recent trip up Mt. Logan in the Yukon. Conrad’s perfect
world includes an endless winter, a whole bunch of maps and food,
and a pair of skis - this would make him about as happy as you
can imagine! Conrad is based out of Banff where he lives with
his wife Coralee. |

Felix is a graduate of the TNF ACC Leadership Course and is a recipient of the Karl Nagy Memorial Award. He has put many miles on his climbing and ski boots on trips to France, Switzerland, Italy, Bolivia, Nepal and Peru where he learned to order beer in six languages. He is currently an ACMG Hiking, Backpacking and Assistant Ski guide based out of Canmore. |
