This backcountry climbing camp is aimed at young-at-heart climbers who are looking for moderate mountaineering routes with daily trekking options. This year’s camp will take you to historic location around Stanley Mitchell Hut. The rustic charm of this historic hut, located in the Little Yoho Valley and built in 1939, will add to the backcountry wilderness experience of this camp.

Wrapped in interesting history and surrounded by spectacular peaks and glaciers, the area around the Stanley Mitchell Hut presents a wide range of opportunities for everybody, regardless of abilities or interests. Superb hiking, climbing, scrambling and ski-touring all exist at the head of this valley, and the Stanley Mitchell Hut provides a most excellent base from which to enjoy it all!

We’ll spend our days summitting peaks and spend our evenings spinning yarns in the comforts of the Hut. Climbing objectives include: the President, the Vice President, Mt MacArthur and the Whaleback. The camp will end off with a never-to-be-forgotten hike out the Iceline Trail with its breathtaking views of Takakkaw Falls.

If you are over 55 and seeking company and challenges with others in this age range, this camp is for you.

An avid climber, hiker, and skier, Ferdl started climbing in his native Austria, where he originally became a mountain guide. After immigrating to Canada he was initially employed by Canadian Mountain Holidays and is a past instructor for the ACMG. He first guided for the Alpine Club of Canada at our GMC at Lake O'Hara in 1968. Fluent in English, German and Spanish, his guiding career has taken him to Europe, Canada and Mexico. He has a variety of first ascents to his credit in both Austria and the Canadian Rockies. In addition to being a guide, he is also a geologist - he likes to study rock formations from near and far and explain the geology of the area to interested guests.

Rick has been hiking, skiing, snow shoeing and climbing for most of his adult life, in the Rockies, in the Vancouver area, and now in the Okanagan. He has attended many Alpine Club of Canada trips, including the first 55+ trip, and he worked for a number of years as a Camp Coordinator at various GMCs. Rick is a retired wildlife biologist and claims still to know the names of many plants and birds to be seen in the Rockies. He hikes regularly in the Penticton area, and has become very proficient with the use of gps equipment to ensure his colleagues know where they are all times!
