Marmot Women's Ski Camp

Marmot

Marmot is a supportive sponsor of the Women's Program, providing funding to make this camp accessible to as many women as possible. Marmot’s values and that of the ACC coincide, particularly on the issue of developing the skills of female mountaineers. Marmot has supported this program since its inception and we thank them for their assistance.

Are men and women really that different - perhaps a question better answered in a philosophy class?  But there are certain undeniable differences that affect how we, as women, enjoy the backcountry.

Designed and offered for women exclusively, this unique ski camp provides an opportunity to work on winter skills and gain ski-mountaineering experience in an “all female” setting – all participants and staff will be female.

Activities in the field will be organized and supervised by ACMG guides, and participants will be given the opportunity to plan days and to lead according to their abilities. Participants will be encouraged to participate in decision-making and otherwise challenge themselves to learn as much as possible.

With the unparalleled Wapta Icefield as a backdrop for this year’s camp, we’ll spend the week together exploring peaks and glaciated terrain. Evenings will be spent in the comforts of the Alpine Club of Canada’s Bow and Balfour huts.

Level of Difficulty

This camp is designed for women with some backcountry skiing experience. You must have a good level of fitness and be comfortable skiing the equivalent of blue/intermediate and black/advanced ski runs at downhill ski areas. Additionally, you must be able to ski with a 16 – 18kg (35 – 40lb) pack for several hours. Participants will be expected to share in carrying group gear and food while on the course.

“Awesome!!” – 2010 Marmot Women’s Ski Camp Participant

“This week long women’s camp far surpassed my expectations both in the level of material covered as well as the professionalism of the staff.” – 2011 Marmot Women’s Climbing Camp Participant

ACMG Mountain Guide Sylvia Forest

  Camp Manager Christina Brodribb

Syl Forest grew up in Calgary, but moved to Jasper in 1987 where she became a park warden. Sylvia taught climbing and mountaineering for the Department of National Defence Cadet Camp program from 1985 to '87, which inspired her to become a mountain guide. As a park warden, Sylvia used her mountaineering skills to contribute to the public safety rescue program in Jasper. Sylvia completed her UIAGM certification in 2001. Sylvia is currently the Alpine Specialist for Mount Revelstoke and Glacier National Park where she oversees the public safety and rescue program, and she continues to guide throughout the year.

Christina Brodribb has been volunteering with the Rocky Mountain Section since 2003. She has led several Rocky Mountain section trips and has been a camp manager for various ACC National club trips. Since 2007, Christina has also been an amateur leader at the General Mountaineering Camp. Christina's enthusiasm and love of the outdoors is genuine and infectious!
