Argentine Glacier Ski Camp

2009 will see us returning to the Argentine Glacier for another unforgettable ski mountaineering week filled with turns and summits.

The Argentine Glacier is located in the heart of the northern Selkirks, just southwest of Mount Sir Sanford in the vicinity of Moberly Pass.  A helicopter will fly us in and out of the area where we will set up our tent-based camp at the edge of treeline, just below the glacier.

The area around our home base boasts superb skiing on three different glaciers and amazing views of Sir Sanford, Iconoclast and Citadel.  There are all kinds of opportunities for loop circuits, long glacier runs, peak bagging objectives, and plenty of tree skiing for bad-weather days – an all-round fantastic ski mountaineering location.

The Argentine Glacier camp is for ski mountaineers looking for a variety of remote and beautiful slopes that offer great spring skiing.  Join us for this memorable adventure and explore everything this area has to offer!

Level of Difficulty

All members of the party must have some experience with ski mountaineering, glacier skiing and winter camping skills. The strong, experienced skier will enjoy and be challenged by a week of skiing in the area. An advanced level of fitness and high-intermediate to advanced downhill ski abilities are essential. This means being comfortable skiing ‘black runs’ with a 7-9 kg (15-20 lb) pack in backcountry snow conditions. For those individuals who live at lower elevations (less than 1000m/3300’), we recommend that you arrive in the mountains a few days before the camp, to ski independently and acclimatize to our altitude. This camp involves living at and above 1980m/6500’ for the whole week.

  Zac Robinson

Conrad arrived in Canmore AB for a mountaineering course in 1994 and got completely hooked on all forms of mountain adventures. After completing a Kinesiology degree at the University of Calgary, he moved back to the mountains and began guiding, climbing and skiing full time. Conrad feels fortunate that he has been able to explore many different places in North America as a result of this path - from a start leading trips on the West Coast Trail, to guiding canoeing in Minnesota and the North West Territories, to more recently guiding climbing and skiing trips throughout the mountain ranges of B.C., Alberta and up north into the St. Elias. Some highlights for him have been guiding more remote ski traverses, and a recent trip up Mt. Logan in the Yukon.  Conrad’s perfect world includes an endless winter, a whole bunch of maps and food, and a pair of skis - this would make him about as happy as you can imagine!  Conrad is based out of Banff where he lives with his wife Coralee.

Dr. Zac Robinson is a mountaineering historian who currently teaches in the Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Alberta.  On all of the summer and winter camps that Zac has camp managed for the ACC in the past 5 years, participants have benefited immeasurably from his experience, love of the mountains, and winning attitude.
