The Little Yoho Valley around Stanley Mitchell
Hut is one of the most beautiful areas in the Rockies, and one of the
most seldom visited in winter because of a notoriously long approach. We’re taking
the sting out of the access by taking a short cut: the group will
fly by helicopter to the outside boundary of Yoho National Park. From
there, we’ll ski the rest of the way in to Stanley Mitchell Hut,
taking in the views along the way. To make things even easier,
porters will carry all of the food for the week to the Hut, leaving your
pack relatively light on the way in!
For the rest of the week we’ll explore
the area around the historic and charming Stanley Mitchell Hut including
possible ascents of such notable peaks as the President, the Vice President,
MacArthur Peak, Isolated Peak and of course there will be plenty of
turns on the way back to the hut each day.
Stanley Mitchell Hut is a large but cozy log
cabin situated in a beautiful meadow just at treeline and views from
the front door are breathtaking. Wrapped
in interesting history and surrounded by spectacular peaks and glaciers,
this area presents a wide range of scenery and terrain to keep you occupied.
If you’ve never seen this area, or have
only seen it in the summer time, this is your chance to experience
a winter wonderland second to none.
Level of Difficulty
The strong, experienced skier
will enjoy and be challenged by a week of skiing in the
area. An advanced level of fitness and high-intermediate
to advanced downhill ski abilities are essential. This
means being comfortable skiing ‘black
runs’ with a 7-9 kg (15-20 lb) pack in backcountry
snow conditions. Porters will be used to transport
your food for the week hut, and a helicopter flight will
cut the approach time to the hut in half, but there will
still be a half day of skiing with your pack for the week
from the helicopter landing to the hut.
Due to the hut-based nature of the camp, everyone will be
able to get as much skiing in as they like. You will be able
to choose between short or long days, or days of complete
relaxation in the hut. |
