About the TNF Leadership Program
Twice annually (winter and summer), the ACC, with generous assistance from The North Face, runs leadership courses exclusively for our volunteer activity organizers from our local sections across the country.
Offered in the mountains, these courses enhance leadership and decision making skills that are applicable to ACC activities across Canada. More information about the Leadership Program is available here.
Winter 2017 Leadership course at Lake Louise
The 2017 Winter Leadership Course will be based out of the HI-Lake Louise Alpine Centre in Lake Louise, AB. This central, front country location gives access to a broad range of terrain and slopes as well as facilities for indoor sessions and suits this course perfectly.
Vehicle transportation during the course, guiding, seven nights accommodation and all meals are included in your course fee. Please note that you are responsible for your own accommodation arrangements on the nights prior to and directly after the course.
This will be an intensive, thought-provoking course with lots of learning for everybody. Conditions permitting, the majority of the daylight hours will be spent actively in the field building skills and techniques. The evenings – after dinner and a bit of relaxation – informal presentations and group discussions will be held.
*Please note the course does not cover instruction on basic skiing or first aid.

How to Apply
- Completed application form – Please use the Online Application Form. This will automatically send you a receipt that you can send a copy of to your Section. By submitting this form, one copy will automatically be sent to the National Office. This must be done by midnight November 8, 2016.
- Short letters of reference from two climbing partners who can attest to your skills and experience. One must be an ACMG guide, Camp Manager or Section Volunteer Leader. References (including name, relationship, and email address) should send their letters directly to email@example.com by midnight November 8.
- Section endorsement – your Section Executive should also send their endorsement of your application directly to firstname.lastname@example.org by midnight
November 8. All section endorsements must use the Section Endorsement Form.
Please ensure that your application is complete, and that your letters of reference have been submitted on time. Incomplete or late applications will likely be rejected.
If you have been selected for one of the spots at the TNF-ACC leadership course, you will be notified no later than December 15, and you must complete and return documents including The Alpine Club of Canada’s Waiver of Liability and Model Release form as a condition of registration. This form will be sent out to candidates who have been selected. Participants will not be allowed to attend the course if the completed form is not received prior to the commencement of camp.
This leadership course is designed for those members who already have some skiing experience, and may have taken some related courses. The objective of the TNF-ACC courses is to provide leadership training for our Section activity organizers. It should be emphasized that this course is designed to compliment, not replace, technical or leadership training courses offered at the local level; rather, it is an exceptional opportunity for participants from across the country to share a focused learning program.
The following criteria are used when assessing applications:
- applicants must submit a complete application, including all requested references and Section endorsement;
- applicants must have the appropriate basic technical skills and abilities to participate safely in the course and travel through the terrain under professional ACMG guidance;
- applicants should be active, contributing members of the ACC, and have or willing to express a commitment to organizing Section activities once they’ve completed the TNF course.
Within these guidelines, the committee strives to balance participants’ representation of different ACC Sections.
Level of Difficulty
The focus of the courses is to provide training for current and future volunteer ACC section trip leaders. Applicants are expected to have previously organized – and be planning to continue to lead – ACC activities, and have a basic level of technical skill relevant to their learning objectives. Participants are expected to be fit, strong and have confidence travelling on skis in the mountains. We can’t stress enough the need for a good level of fitness – participants must be prepared to spend long, consecutive days in the field, building skills and techniques. In the evenings, there will be presentations and group discussions on various leadership topics. For those individuals who live at lower elevations (less than 1000m/3300’), we recommend that you arrive in the mountains a few days before the camp to do some skiing on your own. You will be living at and above 1980m/6500’ for the week.
