ACC Award Recipients 2010

The following ACC Awards have been granted by the Club's board of directors, Please acknowledge the following ACC Award recipients who have volunteered their time to serve their fellow Club members at either the national or section levels of the Club. The Awards are granted by the Club's Board of Directors.

Ken Cox – Prince George Section

Ken has been an active leader in the Prince George Section for over 20 years. Ken’s diverse skill set has inspired other Section members to follow in his footsteps. Ken’s technical skills remain current by course work and study. In 2008 Ken received the Eric Brooks Leader Award.

John Huybers – Prince George Section

John has been active in the Prince George Section for over 10 years. In addition to leading summer and winter trips, John has been active on the Section’s executive. John is a graduate of both the summer and winter The North Face (TFN) leadership training camps. John received the Eric Brooks Leader Award in 2005.


Distinguished Service Awards - 3

Neil Bosch – Edmonton Section

Neil has made many significant contributions to the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) at both the Section and national office levels. Neil is an active contributor to the Edmonton Section’s fundraising and promotional activities. Neil is currently the ACC’s treasurer. In addition Neil annually volunteers as an amateur leader at the Club’s general mountaineering camp (GMC).

Kit Moore – Toronto Section

Kit is an ambassador of the Toronto Section in many ways. For over 15 years Kit has made significant contributions to a wide range of Section activities. Kit has been chairperson of the Section’s Bon Echo property for the past five years. Kit has been active in negotiating climbers’ access issues in Southern Ontario. Kit is an accomplished rock climber who is an inspiration to new Section members.

Sandy Walker – Calgary and Rocky Mountain Sections

A decade ago Sandy made a decision to embrace the world of climbing. During the ensuing years Sandy’s contributions have benefitted both the Calgary and Rocky Mountain Sections. Sandy is a competent leader and administrator. Her skills have introduced many new ACC members to our mountains.


Eric Brooks Leader Award - 4

Shaun Fluker – Calgary Section

Shaun started climbing in 1997 and each year has improved his skill set. Shaun has regularly participated in the Calgary Section’s summer camp where he is known for encouraging new members to improve their mountaineering skills. Shaun appreciates a good day out in the mountains while sharing his abilities with others.

Rob Leblanc – Toronto Section

Rob started climbing 15 years ago. For many years Rob has lead rock climbing and ice climbing days for the Toronto Section. Five years ago Rob took on the role of mountaineering co-ordinator for the Section and since then has organized an annual mountaineering camp. Rob readily passes on his skills to others.

Reinhold Mayerhofer – Edmonton Section

Reinhold is an experienced trip co-ordinator and has developed considerable mountaineering experience. Reinhold has proven his advanced skills on many Edmonton Section ski-mountaineering traverses involving glacier travel and winter camping. In 2007 Reinhold completed The North Face winter leadership course.

Martin Siegert – Vancouver Section

Martin has been climbing for over 20 years. For the past few years Martin has co-ordinated the Vancouver Section’s weekly climbing nights outdoors when weather allows and indoors during winter months. Martin has also been the main organizer of the Section’s basic mountaineering course. In addition Martin has co-ordinated a Section climbing camp to the Bugaboos for the past few summers. These programs have all helped to increase the Section’s membership.


Don Forest Service Award - 9

Gary Arnold – Edmonton Section

For over 5 years Gary has been an active contributor to the management of the Edmonton Section. Most notably Gary is the chair of the Section’s events and activity committee. Gary enjoys co-ordinating Section trips when his time allows.

Joanne Bezanson-Earle – Prince George Section

Joanne has made a significant contribution to the ongoing success of the Prince George Section over many years. When help is need Joanne can be counted on to get involved. Organization of Section-run film festivals is one area where Joanne has made a major contribution on behalf of the Section.

John Booth – Edmonton Section

For the past 10 years John has been the driving force behind the Edmonton Section’s annual summer mountaineering camp. The Section has a history of running camps accessible to all Club members and John has upheld this tradition. Organizing a one or two week camp for up to 30 participants takes a lot of work. Often John takes on the added role of camp manager!

Yvon Deschambault – St. Boniface Section

Since 2002 Yvon has been an integral part of the St. Boniface Section executive. Yvon’s technical skills and enthusiasm have made him a valued trip co-ordinator. In addition Yvon has been active in promoting the Section’s youth program. In 2006 Yvon was a member of the Manitoba ACC centennial committee which hosted the Club’s centennial celebrations in Winnipeg. Presently Yvon is chair of the Section’s activities committee.

Shannon Finnegan – Smithers/Bulkley Valley Chapter of the Prince George Section

Shannon was responsible for establishing the Smithers/Bulkley Valley Chapter. Shannon continues to serve as the Chapter’s representative with the Prince George Section. Shannon has made a major contribution in local climber/skier access issues.

Russ Moir – Vancouver Island Section

Russ has been a respected Vancouver Island Section executive committee member since 1992. Russ’s direct contributions to the Section include: co-editor of the Section newsletter (7 yrs.) FMCBC rep. (2 yrs.), access liaison, trip co-ordinator, ACC hut custodian & work party contributor. Russ is a very competent leader and has explored many remote alpine areas of Vancouver Island.

Darrel Newman – Ottawa Section

For the past decade Darrel has become increasingly involved with the Ottawa Section executive. Most importantly for more than 3 years Darrel has been instrumental in increasing the Section’s membership through the promotion of hiking and cross-country ski trips. Darrel has developed two workshops, backcountry hiking and a navigation course, that are very popular with new members. Darrel often co-ordinates Section trips himself but more importantly he instils the confidence in others to learn and take-on this role.

Andrea Petzold – Rocky Mountain Section

For several years Andrea has been involved in a number of the Rocky Mountain Section’s projects and activities including: Section representative to the ACC national office, running the Section photo contest, and electronic-newsletter editor. In 2009 Andrea initiated and organized a Section leadership camp. Andrea regularly upgrades her skills so that her Section hiking and ski trips are managed competently.

Kayla Stevenson – Vancouver Section

Kayla has readily contributed her high level computer skills to assisting the Vancouver Section on several important projects. Most notable is the introduction of an electronic trip calendar. Section members can now post trips and sign up for trips through an on-line calendar. The evaluation and integration of this system was a large undertaking that consumed countless hours.


Each year the Awards Committee reviews the award nominations and submits its recommendations to the Club's board of directors for approval.  The current members of Awards Committee are:
