Regular
Events - Monthly section meeting
The monthly section meeting is held on the third Tuesday of every month at the Bow Waters Canoe Club.
The exceptions are July when we are too busy in the mountains to have a meeting and in August when we meet
at Edworthy Park to have a barbecue instead! After a short business meeting starting at
7:30 pm, members socialize over a beer (or two) or a glass of wine (or two) until
the second half of the meeting when a slide show is presented.
Bow Waters Canoe Club - 1975 - 26th Street S.E.
(Located just off 17Ave SE, east of Deerfoot Trail)
These slide shows are presented by members or local personalities and run the
gamut from expedition climbing, such as Andy Evan's ascent of the N. Ridge of Mt.
Everest, to the section climbing and ski committee's presentations of the
'Best of the Year'.
The annual general meeting of the section is held during the October
monthly meeting each year.
- Annual photography competition
You don't want to miss this one! Normally every April, the section holds
its annual photography competition, challenging all section members to put their
best foot forward. The results are always spectacular, in categories which include
Winter Mountaineering, Flora and Fauna, Skiing, and Rock Climbing. At the same
meeting, the best cooks (or those most willing to try) in the section provide for
The Trail Snack Contest, a tired mountaineer's dream of treats to satisfy the tummy in
the mountains.
- Wednesdays at the climbing or at local crags
wall
During the winter, the climbing wall at the Calgary Climbing
Center is available to section members on Wednesday evenings at a discounted rate when you
present your membership card. This becomes a weekly focal point for some section members who
can't keep from climbing the walls for six months of the year. Once the snow disappears, we
move outside to local crags on Wednesday evenings. Check the
Upcoming Events page or the
summer schedule for more details.
- Volunteers' barbeque
Held each fall to honour those who have volunteered their time and energy to section
activities during the preceding year, it's a highpoint on the social calendar
for the section. Of course, free beer and food is always sure to be a hit around
a bunch of climbers and skiers.
- Annual Rock and Ice Reviews
Hosted by the Climbing Committee, these weekend gatherings are intended to provide
an early-season opportunity for section members to get out and warm up on either
rock (in the spring) or ice (in the early winter). Normally held over a weekend,
the Saturday evening party provides much needed refreshments and social interaction
between the big fun of Saturday's climbs on easier terrain and the big fears of
Sunday's climbs on more varied and challenging terrain, for those who are interested.
