    Trip Participant Responsibility Guidelines
    Notice to All Participants:
    • The activities of the Calgary Section of the ACC are conducted by amateur mountaineers on all occasions unless otherwise stated.
    • To comply with insurance regulations, participants must be members of The Alpine Club of Canada and have completed an insurance waiver form prior to every club activity.
    • Participants are responsible for their own safety at all times and are expected to have at least basic equipment. A participant who does not know the requirements and demands of a particular event should ask the coordinator well in advance. As well, participants should be in reasonable physical condition.
    • Never go on a trip that you are not capable of completing safely.
    • Newcomers to the Club should give extra attention to these responsibility guidelines for all participants.
    • Participants are requested to contact the trip coordinator by 10:00pm on the Wednesday prior to the event. Please contact the trip coordinator 30 days in advance for trips requiring hut bookings or of an extended nature. These trips are indicated by an asterisk (*) throughout the schedule.
    Trip Coordinator:
    • Contact wardens, committee members, or experienced mountaineers/climbers to obtain information on the physical and technical demands of their trips and to be aware of the conditions, especially avalanche hazards, at the time of their trip.
    • Ensure that there are sufficient group/rope leaders if the party is sub-divided.
    • Limit participation to a number that will allow the trip to be done safely and to people with sufficient ability and equipment. If unfamiliar with anyone, ask directly about their experience.
    • Ensure that all participants have signed a waiver form prior to every section outing.
    • Team the less with the more experienced participants and direct all to activities within their abilities. Encourage experienced rope teams to make their own plans within the overall party objectives.
    • Arrange hut space and keys, campsites, overnight registration, transportation, ropes, first aid supplies, rescue equipment, etc, as required.
    • Ask one participant to write a trip report for The Chinook. (Yeah!)
    • For more information check out the Trip Coordinator's Handbook.
    Group / Rope Leader:
    • Learn all you can about the area, routes, weather, and participants.
    • Choose your rope team so that it includes enough experienced members and a route within everyone's abilities.
    • Inform the trip leader of your route, possible variations and a time plan.
    • Keep the team together and try to make the event enjoyable for everyone.
    Party Member:
    • Ensure that your membership of either The Alpine Club of Canada or one of the sections is current and that you have completed an insurance waiver form.
    • Do not go on a trip beyond your abilities. If unsure, ask the trip leader, relating your experience and condition. If unexperienced, go on easier trips first.
    • Learn about the available routes.
    • Ensure that your equipment is adequate and keep it in good order. Do not rely on leader or other group member to provide gear, unless arrangements are made prior to outing.
    • Try to form a rope team before departure; if unexperienced, team up with someone experienced to simplify the trip leader's planning.
    • Club meetings, bouldering sessions, barbecues and easier trips are good opportunities to meet rope leaders.
    • Share expenses.
    In Case of an Accident:
    • The trip leader should consider the severity and implications of the accident, the remaining hazards, the time, the terrain, and the available resources, when deciding what should be done next.
    • The leader should ensure that everyone's present safety is maintained and danger is minimized as consistent with emergency activities.
    • If help is needed, the leader should organize an orderly expedition.
    • If conditions permit, witnesses should stay in the area to provide any necessary information to rescue personnel.
    • All party members should (i) inform the person(s) in charge of any special abilities; (ii) ensure their own safety and, unless their help is required, stay clear of rescue activities; (iii) cooperate with everyone involved in emergency operations.
    • One person, preferably the trip leader, should prepare a written report and inform the section chair of all the circumstances of the accident. Any further public comment should be left to the Canmore clubhouse head office.
