The Artist and the Mountaineer The Alpine Club of Canada Centennial Art Exhibition
The Alpine Club of Canada’s Art Project is an opportunity to honour thirteen outstanding members of The Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) through the creation of thirteen works of art. Each ACC member was paired with an artist who has a strong connection to mountain landscape. The ACC members were chosen based on their various contributions to the ACC. Some are accomplished mountain climbers, while other are known for their vision, leadership and promotion of all the ACC represents. They are all outstanding members, both long term and recent, and include both women and men. The selected artists are known for their connection to mountain landscapes. The exhibition includes two dimensional works (painting, drawing and textiles) and three dimensional works (stone, wood, metal and glass). The project started with the ACC honoured member identifying a place in the Canadian Rockies that has special significance to them. It might be a favourite hiking trail, the first placed visited in the mountains or a location where they faced their greatest challenge. This place has powerful memories and reflects an important part of their connection with the mountains and with the ACC. After much planning and many conversations, together the artist and the ACC member visited this special place which allowed the artist to view, sketch and photograph the location. During this visit, the ACC member shared with the artist their experiences and attachment to the location. The artist created a work of art based on the visit, their meetings and an interpretation of the relationship the ACC member has with the place. From October 13th 2006, until January in 2007, the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies will host an exhibition of art created from this project. In addition to the artwork, the exhibition will include photographs of the pairs, a video which captures the creation of the works of art and narratives from both the ACC member and the artist.
