The 100th Annual General Meeting
of the Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) will be held at the Glacier Park
Lodge, Rogers Pass at 1:00 pm Pacific Time on Saturday July 15, 2006.
In addition to attending the general
business of the club there will be a series of talks given by distinguished
members of the ACC.
William Lowell Putnam
Author of “The Great Glacier and Its’ House” will
talk about the first trip that he made to the area in 1942 when he traveled
from New England with the Harvard Mountaineering Club. Bill Putnam is
an honorary member of the Alpine Club of Canada, the American Alpine
Club, the Appalachian Mountain Club and the UIAA
Bruce Fraser
Bruce joined the ACC in 1953 and was a participant at the 1956 General
Mountaineering Camp. This camp celebrated the 50th anniversary of the
ACC. Bruce will give a slideshow of the highlights of that camp. Bruce
attended 19 general mountaineering camps (GMC) over the next five decades
and was an amateur guide at many of them. He was awarded a silver rope
during the 1964 GMC at the French Military Group.
As well as Calgary Section Chairman, Bruce was the ACC’s Ski Camp
Chairman and ran three early ski camps at Rogers Pass, Yoho and the
Tonquin.
Dr. Henry Vaux Jr.
Dr. Vaux is the grandson of William Vaux who undertook the first studies
of the Illecillewaet (Great) Glacier in 1899. Dr. Vaux is a world-renowned
water economist who has undertaken a photographic study of the glacier
that replicates those of his grandfathers. His talk will be on the change
in the glaciations of the area.
