As we approach our centennial, the Alpine Club of Canada is looking forward to celebrating 100 years with a number of projects and events, including rebuilding the Fay Hut which was destroyed by forest fire in August 2003. We invite you to join us in these celebrations by participating in the various events that will take place in 2006 and to support the Club in its endeavours by donating to the Centennial Fund Campaign.

The Centennial Fund Campaign is intended to allow the ACC to rebuild the Fay Hut, and replace the Pat Boswell (Toronto) Cabin. It will also provide funding for initiatives in the areas of access and environment, mountain culture and leadership development. And it will help fund centennial celebration events right across the country. A successful campaign will leave the Club in good financial condition as we begin our second century of operations.

Other Centennial Projects

In addition to its facilities operations, the Alpine Club of Canada is involved in many other worthwhile projects in need of your support:

Environment Fund
Provides support that contributes to the protection and preservation of mountain and climbing environments, including the preservation of flora and fauna in their natural habitat. The Club makes grants for wilderness conservation projects in both alpine and arctic areas.

Mountain Culture Fund
Promotes the understanding and appreciation of Canada’s mountain heritage through the publication of written material and electronic media. Examples include the Art of Lake O’Hara, published late last year, and the Summit Series on mountaineering biographies.

Library and Library Conservation Funds
Committed to the growth and enhancement of the Club’s impressive collection of mountain literature, which is housed at the Whyte Museum of the Rockies in Banff. Applies conservation measures to older titles in order to preserve the library for the future.

Leadership Development Fund
Supports activities and programs to develop leaders for the Club’s section and national level mountaineering trips. The Club provides its leaders education and experience so that Club members can go safely with them into the backcountry.

Endowment Fund
Donations that are not directed to reconstruction of the Fay Hut or one of our other funds will be added to the Endowment Fund to create a lasting legacy for the Alpine Club of Canada.

For a number of years I have admired the work of The Alpine Club of Canada. With relatively limited resources, the Club has consistently and professionally delivered a wide range of services to its members. It has encouraged preservation of wilderness and fostered a sense of environmental sustainability. It has developed outdoor leadership and has protected the long and colourful history of the Club. For these reasons, I am pleased to jump-start The Centennial Fund Campaign with a $60,000 donation - $50,000 towards the reconstruction of the historic Fay Hut and $10,000 for the creation of a digital archive of the entire 100-year collection of Alpine Club of Canada journals. I encourage you to consider contributing to these two, or other worthwhile, projects being financed by the Centennial Fund.
