When Mike Mortimer first approached me and asked for my thoughts on some projects he was working on, I gladly agreed. I’d had a few previous discussions with Mike regarding the possible design of a centennial coin. This eventually led us down the path of designing a new Centennial logo for the Club. After receiving the info and a rough draft from the powers that be, I sat down in front of my trusty Mac and started the process of building the logo. The triangular shape of the logo seemed appropriate as it fit with the mountain scheme and also as we had three lines of text to incorporate. The main concerns were regarding the choice of colors for the background and whether or not using two climbers was appropriate but with some feedback from National we agreed it could work.

As I am a photographer first and have had a fair bit of experience in graphic design, I am by no means an illustrator. Meaning I have a hard time drawing much more than stick people. The solution to creating the two climbing figures was resolved with a few clicks of the Nikon. I dressed myself in the closest fashion of a 1906 climber and my partner Lise played the role of the 2006 modern climber. I combined our silhouettes with the mountain image so now we truly are part of the history of the ACC! The final touch was to add a few stars to the sky as the Latin at the bottom of the logo roughly translates to “this way to the stars”.

Thanks to Mike Mortimer, Suzan Chamney and the rest of those from National who were involved and provided input on this project. It’s an honour to have been asked to create this logo as the ACC has meant a great deal to me over the years and surely will into the future.
