Ski Mountaineering Race

Sunshine 5000

Alberta's First Ski Mountaineering Race

Ski mountaineering races are at the roots of skiing. Back in 1928 the first skiers in Sunshine meadows raced each other up and around these meadows.

Now almost 80 years later Sunshine will host Alberta’s first ski mountaineering race.
The Sunshine 5000 will be the first Randonnee Race in the Rockies. This race tests competitors’ endurance, skiing skills and over-all mountaineering abilities. The competitors must climb and skin a total of 5000 feet, racing up, down and around the mountain. Competitors must climb and descend under their own power using backcountry skiing
equipment and techniques. Such a race requires approximately the same amount of energy as a half marathon.

"The terrain at Sunshine lends itself to providing a very exciting race. Competitors will be challenged by the climbs and thrilled by the descents. Who has ever raced up and down Delirium Dive?” Greg Hill, organiser and leading Canadian racer.

Ski mountaineering competitions require the skills of a climber, the experience of a mountaineer and the courage of a racer. Greg hopes to draw from the pool of athletes in
and around Calgary.

Ideally it will be a “first time” for everyone. Come out and challenge yourselves.
