| The Great Canadian Slide Show | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Great Canadian Slide Show is part of the Alpine Club of Canada's centennial celebrations. The show will take place on Saturday, October 14 at the Rolston Recital Hall at the Banff Centre (in the Music and Sound building, above the parkade), starting at 11:00 am. There will be no fee for admission, however donations will be accepted for the newly formed Climbers Access Society of Alberta. The hall holds 200 people, seating will be first come, first served and the doors will open at 10:30am. Four speakers will each give a 45 minute to one hour presentation, as outlined below. There will be a lunch break between 1:00 and 2:00pm. 11:00 am - The Best of Canadian Climbing and Powder Skiing - Chic Scott
Chic Scott will take us on a journey through the mountains of Canada, showing us the magnificent wilderness of BC's Coast Mountains, the jagged summits of the Columbia Ranges and the storied Canadian Rockies. We will travel east to the Laurentians to find waterfall ice climbing in the Malbaie Valley and rock climbing at Val David. We will journey north to the mountainous expanses of Ellesmere Island and the granite walls of Baffin Island in Nunavut, the magic of the Cirque of the Unclimbables in NWT and the frozen majesty of Yukon's Mount Logan.
It has been forty years since Chic Scott discovered the magic of high places. During a lifetime of adventure he has climbed and skied around the world, organized clubs and foundations, written books and worked as a mountain guide. Chic's presentations are a lively mix of humour, exciting stories, philosophy and a love of high places.
12:00 noon - Being Caribou- Five months on Foot with an Arctic Herd - Leanne Allison
Learn about one of the 'great Canadian caribou herds' and a couple from Canmore, AB who followed them on their annual migration from the central Yukon to Alaska's coastal plain and back again. Slides and clips from their award winning film will give a glimpse into what it was like to be part of one of the largest mammal migrations in the world. Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison have used their journey, book and film to reach over a million people with a compelling story about this caribou herd that is threatened by oil and gas development.
Leanne Allison grew up in Calgary and has had a passion for the mountains since she was a teenager. She was part of the first all women's ascent of Mount Logan's east ridge and in the past decade has steered her spirit of?adventure towards conservation projects.
2:00 pm - The Alpine Club of Canada's Mountaineering Camps - Cam Roe
Cam Roe will be giving a lively and humorous presentation about the ACC's mountaineering camps. The ACC has had a 100 year history of making first ascents at its camps, and of introducing aspiring climbers to the mountains. Cam will have photos and stories from the early 1900's through to the 2006 camps - covering a full range of locations, equipment, methods of access, and styles of climbing.
Cam is the President of the Alpine Club of Canada. He started climbing as a child with his father, and attended his first General Mountaineering Camp (GMC) in the Freshfields in 1976. He has been and remains active at the section level in Calgary, on the national board of the Club and as an amateur leader and camp manager.
3:00 pm - Alpine Climbing in the Canadian Rockies, Alaska and Pakistan - Slawinski-style
Raphael Slawinski will present an inspiring collection of photos and stories from his cutting-edge alpine climbs in the Canadian Rockies, Alaska and Pakistan. Raphael has an impressive list of accomplishments, from first winter ascents of Mt. Temple's north face and Mt. Alberta, to new mixed routes on Mts. Amery, Andromeda and Sarrail in the Canadian Rockies. Rounding out his show will be images and tales from climbing expeditions to Mt. McKinley in Alaska and the Karakoram in Pakistan.
Raphael has a Ph.D. in Geophysics and teaches at Mt. Royal College in Calgary. He is married, and shares his home with two hairless cats who he thinks are adorable.
