ACC Vancouver Section Centennial Camp Tantalus Range Climbing Camp
The Tantalus climbing camp is a great opportunity to explore the spectacular granite peaks of the coast range. The Tantalus Range features jagged ridges and tumbling glaciers, and provides a range of climbing objectives for a variety of skill levels. The camp will be based out of the ACC Vancouver Section’s cabin at Lake Lovelywater (1160m/3800 ft). Routes into the Tantalus Range around the cabin are accessed by rowboat or hiking, with elevation gains of 1500 – 3000 ft.
Climbing objectives include classic ridge routes such as Mts. Niobe (2010m/6600ft) and Pelops (1980m/6500ft), and Omega Mountain (1860m/ 6100ft). Alpha Mtn. (2305m/7562ft) can be accessed via the east ridge, which is mainly a class 3 climb, with a short class 5 section, or the easier south face. More difficult objectives include Mts. Serratus (2326m/7632 ft) and Dione (2590m/8500ft) with mixed snow and rock routes (mixed class 3/4; some class 5 pitches). These peaks require an overnight camp en route—the new Jim Haberl Hut in the Serratus-Dionne col should be finished by 2006, and climbs can be accessed from there. Basic mountaineering experience and gear is required. Cost is estimated at $400 (depending on helicopter costs in 2006), and includes: helicopter fly in and out, accommodation, and dinner (participants provide own breakfast and lunch). The Lake Lovelywater cabin provides a comfortable stay, and has sleeping mattresses, wood stove, and gas burners for cooking. To register: Contact Tony Knight: 604-873-2276;
If you have registered for the camp and for some reason can’t make it, let Tony know as soon as possible. Fees will be reimbursed 80% till May 15; 50% till June 15, and 0 after June 15 (unless a replacement is found by the participant; a waiting list will also be kept).
