2016 MGB Patron: Chic Scott

Long-time ACC Honorary Member Chic Scott was Patron of the 2016 Mountain Guides Ball.

Chic Scott has devoted his life to mountains. He has climbed and skied around the world, organized clubs and foundations, written books and worked as a mountain guide. His odyssey has taken him from the icefields of the Canadian Rockies to the historic climbs of the European Alps, from the grandeur of the Himalaya to the icy solitude of Mount Logan. Some of his major achievements include the first winter ascent of Mount Assiniboine (1967), the first to ski the high-level traverse between Jasper to Lake Louise (1967), the Aiguille du Dru North Face in the French Alps (1973), and Myagdi Matha (1973), the first Himalayan summit reached by a Canadian. Scott has received honorary memberships in the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (1995), the Calgary Mountain Club (1997), The Alpine Club of Canada (2000) and the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies (2014). In 2000, he received the Bill March Summit of Excellence Award at the Banff Mountain Film Festival. But Scott is best known today for his books. His guidebook Summits and Icefields (1994) is a classic of the genre. Pushing the Limits: The Story of Canadian Mountaineering, published in 2000, is widely considered the authority on the subject. He’s followed up with books celebrating ski history, hard climbing on Yamnuska, a biography of Hans Gmoser, and most recently a history of the White/Whyte family of Banff, making Scott one of the most prolific mountain writers in Canada.

What is the Mountain Guides Ball?

The Mountain Guides Ball is an annual gala event that brings together members of the mountain community to celebrate our mountain culture and raise funds for various worthy causes. Each year, a Patron is honoured for their long-time contribution to Canada’s mountain community. New mountain guides are awarded their hard-earned UIAGM pins from the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. Mountain Guides Ball attendees bid on and sometimes battle over 100 fabulous silent auction items, including mountain artwork, gear, clothing, getaways and more. The Chateau Lake Louise serves up a gourmet multi-course dinner with wine. The evening’s final hours are spent socializing and/or dancing.

Brush off your suit and pull out your ball gown. Give your support to the ACC and the ACMG. Come and join us for a fun and memorable evening with old and new friends in the fall of 2017.
