Thanks for joining us at the 28th annual Mountain Guides Ball!

The Mountain Guides Ball is an annual gala event of The Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) and the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) that brings together members of the mountain community to celebrate our mountain culture and raise funds for various worthy causes.

Each year, a Patron is honoured for their contribution to our mountain community, new mountain guides are awarded their UIAGM pins and guests bid on over 100 fabulous silent auction items. The Chateau Lake Louise serves up a gourmet dinner with wine and the evening’s final hours are spent socializing and dancing.

It was definitely the gala of the year!

2017 MGB Patron: Peter Amann

Congratulations to Peter Amann on being named Patron of the 2017 MGB!

A Life in the Mountains

Peter has spent most of the last forty years living in Jasper and working as a Mountain Guide. In the early 1970s, he arrived from the east with a passion for mountains. After climbing and exploring the area for over a decade, he took the Parks Ski Guide exam under Willi Pfisterer which launched him into a life of guiding and working in the mountains that continues to this day.

Peter was the Avalanche Forecaster at Marmot Basin for twenty-two years, a Heli-Ski Guide in Valemount for several more. He has spent most of the past few decades training the Canadian Military SAR Techs, teaching ACMG certification courses for Thompson River University and guiding ACC camps. Peter continues to guide personal clients and friends from across North America.

Work with the Alpine Club and Beyond

Peter has been a proud member of the Alpine Club of Canada since 1977. He continues to work with his local Jasper-Hinton Section, which he helped to found in the early 1990s. Peter was the section’s president/chair for almost twenty years.

The ACC’s General Mountaineering Camps have been a part of Peter’s summers for 25 years, starting with his first camp in 1988 under the mentorship of Don Vockeroth. Peter has worked on the ACC Winter Leadership Program, mentoring new Club leaders for ten years.

Working with the Mountain Heritage Program at Jasper Park Lodge led to Peter’s involvement with the Mt. Alberta Project in 2000. Currently, he works with the ACC Safety and Leadership Committee, and continues to work as Trip Coordinator for the Jasper-Hinton section.

Guiding and Climbing Life

Peter’s interest in remote alpine traverses has led to many guided trips throughout the Rockies and Interior Ranges with a preference for visiting the less-travelled areas and offering this experience to his clients. Memorable trips include several first ascents in the Jasper area and the Interior Ranges.

In addition to his climbing skills, Peter dedicated seven years to the ACMG Board of Directors as the Rockies Representative. These experiences provided him with the opportunity to hone the important skills of mopping floors and doing cleanup after social events.

Peter has enjoyed many decades in the mountains as a guide, leader, instructor, examiner and mentor. Through his private guiding and work with the ACC, TRU, and the ACMG, he is fortunate to continue following his passion for the mountains. He holds dear all the people he has encountered along the way who have shared the experiences, the views from the top and the jokes told along the way.
