Aspiring Custodians

The Alpine Club of Canada operates 23 backcountry huts in Alberta and British Columbia, many of which are staffed with volunteer custodians through the summer and winter months. If you are an ACC member in good standing, have frequented our huts in the past, and would like to volunteer as a custodian, please contact us.

Details of the job:

There are five areas of responsibility expected of a custodian:

  • Representing the ACC in a friendly and professional manner
  • Registering guests and ensuring that hut fees are collected
  • Greeting guests and helping organize hut life
  • Ensuring guests adhere to the rules of the hut system
  • Basic hut maintenance and cleaning

Upon returning from the hut the custodian will also be required to send the records (hut inspection report, booking record, money collected, etc.) to the National Office.

Complete details on these responsibilities can be viewed in the custodian information booklet.

Accommodation arrangements:

Accommodation is complimentary for the custodian. Provided your custodianship is three nights or longer, ACC hut custodians may bring a co-custodian who will also stay for free for the duration of the custodianship. Custodianships of less than three nights entitle only the custodian to stay for free; additional guests must pay regular hut rates.
Custodian positions are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, and they range from one to seven nights in length (seven nights being the maximum length of stay).

What you are responsible for:

All ACC custodians are required to be self-sufficient for the duration of their custodianship. This includes providing their own transportation to and from the hut, supplying their own food, fuel and personal items and making all other personal arrangements. Custodians are responsible for obtaining their Park vehicle permits, but do not need to get the backcountry wilderness overnight passes for the length of their stay at the hut.
