What you need to bring

The following is a list of items you need to take to the huts with you:

  • Your receipt and/or reservation number (will be checked by the custodian - you could be refused access to the hut if you do not have this information).
  • Food and sleeping bag, ear plugs, eye covers.
  • White gas for the cooking stoves & lanterns (only necessary at the Colin,
    Alberta, and Great Cairn Huts).
  • Toilet paper, garbage bag to pack your garbage out, dish soap and a dish towel.
  • Hand sanitizer.
  • Matches and newspaper for those huts with wood burning stoves.
  • First aid kit, 9 volt battery for the smoke detector.
  • Your Parks Canada overnight wilderness pass (can be purchased from the ACC).

Don’t forget to phone the National Office a couple days before you leave to make sure the lock combination hasn’t changed.

If you are visiting the Kokanee Glacier Cabin, Conrad Kain, Bill Putnam (Fairy Meadow) or Great Cairn huts in the summer, you need to take a couple of rolls of chicken wire to wrap around your vehicle. Porcupines have a nasty habit of crawling underneath and chewing on tires and brake lines! Be sure and pin the chicken wire to the ground using rocks, and prop it against your vehicle securely with sticks.
