Rick Mercer goes ice climbing with the Thunder Bay Section
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A couple of weeks ago, comedian Rick Mercer and the crew behind the CBC's Rick Mercer Report visited Thunder Bay, Ontario to sample some of the local culture and winter activities. While in town, Rick sampled Finnish pancakes, experienced a traditional Finnish sauna, and attempted his first ice climb with members of the ACC's Thunder Bay Section. Find out if he was successful at https://admin.alpineclubofcanada.ca/link/to/1013-20606-47-02
Mandatory climbing helmet laws for Ontario?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"The recent year-long ban of two climbers from Bon Echo provincial park for not wearing helmets may be an indicator of new rules coming to provincial parks and conservation areas in Southern Ontario. Last weekend a pair of climbers at Mt Nemo were confronted by park staff and told that a new rule would be imposed requiring all climbers wear helmets. Some climbers fear that if this new mandatory climbing-helmet rule comes into effect, it could transform climbing from an activity that has always emphasized personal responsibility, to one that is highly managed by outsiders who may not understand the complexities of climbing gear." Canadians cranking
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Vikki Weldon of Calgary, Alberta recently sent a 5.13d route called "Division Bell" in Cheakamus Canyon, BC. Will Stanhope of North Vancouver, BC, recently sent "Cobra Crack", a 5.14b trad route at Squamish, BC. Sean McColl of North Vancouver became the first climber in the world to break into the top-ten in both the lead climbing and bouldering events at the same event at the recent World Cup Championships in China. (Source: www.gripped.com). All three climbers are or were members of the ACC's competition climbing section (CEC). The Farnham Creek area is the "Columbia Icefield" of the Interior Ranges of BC. The greatest concentration of high peaks in the Interior Ranges will tower above our camp in Farnham Creek, an exquisitely picturesque home base for this ACC tent-based camp. Mounts Jumbo, Karnak and Commander (all over 3350m/11,000') and the Lieutenants, the Cleaver, and the Guardsmen will all be in striking distance. The camp will run from August 15-20. Training for alpine climbing
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Alpinism, traditionally a haven for rebels and misfits, has been slow to come around to the concept of training purely devoted to the pursuit of excelling at climbing in the mountains. Modern alpinists have had no distinct role models to follow: No Roger Bannister or Michael Phelps to lead the way to breaking new barriers through careful application of athletic training principles." Greg Hill - going for 2 million vertical
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"You could say Greg Hill is a numbers guy. The Canadian ski mountaineer has clocked 50,000 feet of vertical in 24 hours, 80 10,000-foot days in one season, a million vertical feet in one season, and skied the 21 summits of the Monashee Mountains in 21 days. Now, using his multiplication skills and mind-boggling aerobic endurance, Hill is in the midst of an attempt to climb and ski two million vertical feet in a calendar year, averaging 5,500 feet a day, every day." Backcountry with the Kids
----------------------------------------------------------------------
"Erin Eacott and Jason Unger are avid backcountry hikers. The birth of their first child this spring did not deter them from doing what they love best. Like the Eacott-Ungers, more Alberta families are taking advantage of world class trekking in their own backyard. Lawrence White, Executive Director of the Alpine Club of Canada says mountain huts are seeing more use by families."
