The CAJ Submission Guidelines |
|||||||||||||||
The Canadian Alpine Journal (CAJ) is a flagship publication of the Alpine Club of Canada, and is a professional-standard yearly volume. It is a record of the Canadian mountain ethos and mindset, which includes articles and images that reflect the ways that Canadians approach mountain culture, history, sport and science. It is expected that the CAJ represent Canadian climbing coast-to-coast, and that the information in the Journal is current and reflective of the broadest standards of style and ranges of difficulty. It is best framed as a commitment by the Alpine Club of Canada to the climbing community. CAJ contributors are our primary relationship because without you, we would not have a journal. The CAJ gladly accepts articles that have been previously published in other periodicals. We are not particular about first rights; quite the opposite, we are interested in a definitive record of Canadian climbing that will be available as a resource for generations to come. The CAJ does not pay for words or images but if your material is used in the journal, a complimentary copy will be sent to you for your contribution. Please be sure to include a complete mailing address with phone number and e-mail with your submission. The Canadian Alpine Journal reserves the right to edit contributions for size, clarity and accuracy, although much attention is paid to preserving the original tone and style of all submissions we publish. We prefer to work closely with authors, so we may have questions and might ask for revisions. The Alpine Club of Canada reserves the right to publish these works in print, on our website, as part CD/DVD versions or compilations of the Canadian Alpine Journal and in promotional material. Writers retain all other rights to their work. By submitting your article and/or photographs, you are agreeing to these copyright terms. Deadline for submissions is February 1st each year. The CAJ is interested in articles and reports (both in English and French language) of significant mountain achievements accomplished by Canadians, both domestically and internationally. It is also a record of new routes and major repeats by foreign adventurers in Canada. The CAJ is fairly free-form without strict format guidelines thus encouraging alternative avenues of expression including poetry, fiction, humour and reflection. Science related articles pertaining to Canadian mountain culture and environment are also important. Word count can range anywhere between 300 and 2500 words. Text can be e-mailed to: MS Word documents or RTF format please. Otherwise a CD with the text document may be mailed regular post or courier service to the address below. The CAJ offers six departments for which your submission may be used. Feature Articles – This is where we place the best written and most significant pieces whether they be Canadian or foreign. The features are the CAJ’s way of recognizing the best mountain achievements of the year. Regional Articles – This is further sub-divided into The North, The West Coast, The Interior, The Rockies, The East and Foreign. For this we welcome full-length articles, short reports, route descriptions, photos, line drawings, topos, maps, etc. The Lighter Side – Sometimes we take ourselves too seriously and need a reminder that climbing is supposed to be fun. This is a forum for humour, satire, poetry, fiction, artwork, cartoons and funny photos. The Inner Ranges – To juxtapose the Lighter Side, the Inner Ranges focuses on the deeper side of the mountains and how they affect us emotionally, psychologically and philosophically. This is the venue for reflection and contemplation. Remembrances – A place to acknowledge and pay tribute to fallen comrades. Reviews – Book reviews, both Canadian as well as important non-Canadian titles. The CAJ has set a high standard for image quality. The black and white photos inside range in size from ¼-page up to double page spreads. The front and back covers are full colour and an honorarium is paid for the front cover photo. The CAJ gladly accepts slide images as they offer the best reproduction quality. Make sure each slide mount and print photo are accompanied by caption and contact information. If using a digital point-and-shoot, make sure it is set on the highest resolution possible to be sure the file is large enough for us to use. We receive many digital images that we would like to use from a content perspective but simply can not because the resolution and file size is too small. Slides and photo CDs can be mailed or couriered to the address below. We will accept photo submissions via e-mail but please contact the editor first before attaching photos. For first ascents, please include a photo of the mountain feature with a line indicating the new route. If submitting digital images or scans, send two identical photos, one as is and one with the route line. If sending slides, include a print out with the route line. Upon completion of the journal (July 1st each year), all slides and photos will be returned in appropriate photo mailing envelopes. Photo CDs will not be returned unless specifically requested. Please be sure to include full mailing address along with phone number so we know where to send the images. A complimentary copy of the journal will be sent if an image is used in the journal. The CAJ also accepts other graphics such a route topos, maps, artwork and cartoons to accompany articles. These may be mailed to the Editor at the address below or sent electronically to the editor as high resolution jpg files or in the case of maps as vector art if possible.
