Newsletter: The Breeze

The Edmonton Section offers a wide variety of winter and summer mountain activities for both the novice and experienced mountaineer, including indoor climbing, leadership training and a full trip schedule.

The Edmonton Section also has a very active Environment Committee and are Environmental Stewards of the Cardinal Divide Natural Area.

The heart of the section is in the Summer and Winter Trip Schedule.  Day trips, weekend trips, week-long camps, introductory courses, and leadership training are all available throughout the year.  Current details and updates are published in "The Breeze", our monthly newsletter, and an updated trip schedule is maintained on our website.

Monthly meetings featuring a slide show and guest speaker are held on the third Tuesday of every month (except July, August and December).  They are held at the Varscona Hotel, in the Old Strathcona area, at 7:30pm.  Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings to find out more about the Club, to meet new people, and to meeting new climbing and skiing partners.  An outdoor picnic and barbeque is held each June, and there is an Annual Photo Contest and Wine and Cheese held in late November.  Photo contest winners can be seen on our website.

A special bonus of belonging to the Edmonton Section is access to the climbing wall training facility located in the Butterdome at the University of Alberta.  The facility offers ample bouldering plus three separate high walls.  It is the highest climbing wall in Canada and offers leadable routes!  Wednesday night is climbing night for the ACC at the wall when all members climb at no charge.  There are also weekend climbing clinics and competitions, plus rope skills review nights on the first Wednesday of each month.

The Section offers many opportunities for both the novice and experienced mountaineer to learn something new.  Two special courses for novices, "Summer in the Mountains", and "Winter in the Mountains" are held in the winter and spring of each year.  Courses on avalanche safety, navigation, glacier travel, wilderness first aid, climbing and mountaineering are available for all members to improve their skills.  Special training weekends for trip leaders cover ski touring, ice climbing or mountaineering, and cover general leadership skills and group management.
