Website: http://www.accvi.ca The Vancouver Island Section was founded in 1912 and has an active membership today of approximately 200 members, ranging from Victoria to Campbell River and from teens to 70's. Outings are offered year round and vary from day hikes in the local hills to week-long trips in the Coast Mountains or Rocky Mountains. These may include rock climbing, backpacking into remote wilderness areas, ski touring, glacier travel, and often bushwhacking (hence the name of our annual trip report journal, "The Bushwhacker"). Trips schedules are published twice a year (winter and summer), and are available through our website, as well as at local mountain equipment stores. Our motto is "Come back alive, Come back friends, Respect the land, Have fun, Get to the Top." We offer courses and workshops such as crevasse rescue, telemark clinics, avalanche awareness, wilderness first aid, leadership skills, use of ice axe, etc. The Section hosts the Banff Film Festival tour every fall, organizes slide shows and a yearly photo contest as well as a banquet, and invites international speakers / authors. We publish a quarterly newsletter to keep our members informed about mountaineering issues, national and FMCBC information and reminders of upcoming events. We keep a good selection of gear available for members to borrow and have a small library of books and maps. Please visit our website at http://www.accvi.ca |
