Planned Giving

For members of the Alpine Club of Canada, mountains are a way of life. We climb and ski on their magnificent slopes, explore their hidden angles and hike in their beautiful valleys. We photograph their soaring peaks, spend hours reading about their countless challenges, and create literary and artistic mountain images. We seek refuge and solace in the mountains, and know that the time we spend there defines us as individuals like no other experience can. The mountains are always somewhere in our thoughts and, for many of us, the mountains are life itself.

It was that spirit that caused A. O. Wheeler, Elizabeth Parker and others to form the Alpine Club of Canada in 1906. Since then, members of the Club have set the standard for climbing and mountaineering in Canada and abroad. The list of first ascents by ACC members is a long one, and our pride in our alpine accomplishments seems as strong today as when we reached the top. We have challenged ourselves, risen to those challenges, and encouraged others to follow in our footsteps. The mountains have given us so much.

Through generous donations to one or more of the ACC's special funds, our Planned Giving Program provides Club members with the opportunity to celebrate and express thanks for what the mountains have given us. Such donations ensure that the Club can continue to play a leading role in maintaining our wonderful alpine heritage so our children and future generations may enjoy the mountains as we have. To protect our beloved mountains and keep them safe from environmental pressures while maintaining sustainable access. To support projects which enhance Canada's renowned alpine literature, history and art. To assist the Club in maintaining its marvellous system of mountain huts and its Clubhouse facility.

There are so many ways a financial gift to the Club can help, and a donation of any value will be gratefully accepted. You can direct your gift to assist with present day projects, or to support future initiatives undertaken through the Club's Endowment fund.

The ACC Endowment Fund is a permanent legacy, with only the interest income used annually to support worthwhile alpine projects. The income is distributed through grants approved by the national Board of Directors, based on a prescribed set of application procedures and criteria. The Fund has been in place for over 15 years, and has grown considerably over that time through generous bequests from members who included the ACC in their estate planning. The Fund, as with all ACC Funds, is conservatively invested by professionals to achieve modest principal growth while generating income for use each year.

ACC Program Funds are another alternative to consider for Planned Giving to the Alpine Club of Canada. These funds have been created to address specific needs related to objectives and concerns of our membership. Current Program Funds are:

ACC Named Funds are the third category of donations received by the Club under its Planned Giving Program. These are funds created to celebrate a special person or occasion, or as a memorial tribute to someone dear to you. Named Funds can be established with a minimum $25,000 donation, retain their name identification, and can be a separate fund or directed to become part of the Endowment Fund or a Program Fund. In setting up a Named Fund, you can designate it as an "Open" Fund which can accept donations from anyone, or as a "Closed" Fund which can only be contributed to by specified donors.
A Named Fund is often chosen by the family of Club member or alpine friend to remember someone special who loved the mountains. The current named funds are:

Planned gifts to the Alpine Club of Canada are eligible for income tax receipts and can take many forms.

  • Gifts today can be made in the form of cash, securities, a life insurance policy and other assets of value that you would like to donate and that the ACC accepts.
  • Gifts for the future can be made in your will when doing your estate planning. A bequest can be made in the form of a specified amount, or as a percentage of your assets, or the residual of your estate after all your loved ones are taken care of and your other gifts have been distributed.

Your gift to the Alpine Club can be planned to ensure it will be used to suit your interests, in the most tax-advantageous manner possible.

The ACC Planned Giving Program is a meaningful way you can leave a legacy of lasting benefit to the Club and the alpine community in Canada. You will know that your donation will be gratefully appreciated and tastefully acknowledged. It will strengthen the Club, and give personal expression to your love of the mountains.
