Gilbert Parker (Gil) was born in 1937 and started his life-long interest in exploring the mountains in the 1950s with climbs near Calgary and ascents of Mt Rundle. Shortly after moving to Vancouver Island in 1970, he became an active member of the ACC, leading and participating in many trips on the island, throughout B.C. and elsewhere. He was instrumental in running climbing courses with fellow section member Dave Tansley through the YMCA in the early 1970s. Many young Victorians were introduced to the mountains through Gil’s encouragement.
