Regional sections of The Alpine Club of Canada are its strength. The vast majority of club members belong to a regional club section. Membership in a section enables members to participate in numerous summer and winter mountaineering, rock climbing, and skiing activities, coordinated by experienced amateur leaders in their local area. The majority of activities offered by sections are either free or are offered on a break-even basis to their members. Through section trips you’ll learn all the basics you need to travel safely in the mountains, while meeting new friends to enjoy your experiences with.
There are also many social functions and volunteering opportunities in a wide variety of areas ranging from environmental advocacy to section management. Many sections have regular evenings at local climbing gyms for meeting up and getting in shape.
Opportunities to learn the crafts of mountaineering and climbing through local sections abound. Most sections provide basic training courses provided by professional guides or experienced mountaineers. Many sections also provide mountain leadership training for their section members with the aim of continuously improving mountain leadership and safety within the club.

The Yukon Section was established in 2011, the 20th section of the ACC. Based in Whitehorse, the section brings together outdoor-minded people under a common banner to share experiences and enthusiasm, and to explore the natural beauty the Yukon has to offer.
As members of a local section of The Alpine Club of Canada, Yukoners will be able to participate in free local activities, pursue skills development, and help preserve access to the territory’s unique recreational resources, which include Mount Logan, the highest peak in Canada and second highest in North America.

The Yukon Section makes regular use of the Stellar Hut, located in Haines Junction, as a base for hiking and skiing outings. The section does not operate the hut, but members get a reduced rate. Members also receive a 5% discount at Up North Adventures.

The Vancouver Island Section has an active and friendly membership of approximately 425 members, spanning the Island and ranging in age from teens to those in their 70’s.

The Vancouver Section was formed in 1918 during the early years of the exploration of the Coast Range and continues to thrive today. We currently have about 1,300 members. This does not include the several hundred members of the University Varsity Outdoor Club and the Simon Fraser University Hikers Club with whom we are affiliated through the ACC’s Student Outdoor Club Program.
The Vancouver Section welcomes those with any level of experience in the mountains. Many people join the club to get their start in skiing and climbing, or just to spend time in the mountains. New members who already have strong outdoor skills will find themselves in good company.

Section meetings are held monthly (excluding in July, August and December) and include a fabulous slide show and socializing over beverages and snacks. Section Annual General Meeting is held in November along with gourmet treats, door prizes, volunteer recognition, and a special presentation.

The section owns and operates two backcountry huts in the Tantalus range near Squamish: the Tantalus Hut at Lake Lovely Water and the Jim Haberl Hut high in the Dione-Serratus Col. The Vancouver Section and the Whistler Section through the Spearhead Huts Society jointly own and operate the Kees and Claire Hut in the Spearhead Range near Whistler.
ACC Vancouver section members receive discounted accommodation rates on overnights at these huts. Of course, members also enjoy member privileges at the huts managed by the national club.

The ACC Vancouver Sections annually hosts the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour. Most of the proceeds from this event are donated to several local search and rescue organizations and to the Canadian Avalanche Association.
The section is also a sponsor of the Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival.
The section is a member and active supporter of the Federation of Mountain Clubs of BC which advocates for access and protection of BC’s backcountry. The ACC Vancouver Section is particularly proud of having taken a leading role in preserving the Smoke Bluffs rock climbing area in Squamish.

The Whistler Section is located in the rugged Coast Mountains of British Columbia. These mountains are steep, big and uncrowded. The valleys are heavily forested and the alpine area is heavily glaciated. The summer hiking is spectacular and filled with a large variety of beautiful alpine flowers. The granite rock from Squamish to Lillooet is world-class. The snow is deep and plentiful from November to July.

Members’ meetings are typically held once per month, beginning in November each year. Meetings often include slide shows and presentations and discussions of the trip schedules. Our meetings and socials are posted on our online calendar.
We are mountain people and our section is very active. Last year we offered over 100 trips to our section members. Our trips are offered for all ability levels and include introductory courses and advanced outings. Trips vary in length from 1 day to 14 days and the objectives of these trips are to have fun, learn and respect the mountains.
During the winter months we run a variety of backcountry ski trips in the local Whistler/Blackcomb area and off the Duffy Lake Road north of Pemberton. Once a year we run a Spearhead trip – a three- to five-day traverse across a stunning ring of glaciers in the Whistler area.
In summer months we organize climbing evenings at Cheakamus Canyon and encourage climbers of all (or no) experience levels to join us. We also run over 60 hiking outings a summer on trails in the local area.
The Section owns and operates one backcountry hut (the Wendy Thompson Hut) and is working hard to establish three more on the Spearhead traverse.
The Wendy Thompson Hut gives skiers access to extensive ski touring in the Marriott Basin north of Whistler and Section members receive a discounted rate on overnights.

The ACC’s Okanagan Section was created in 1996 to provide a meeting ground for Okanagan residents interested in outdoor recreation in mountain settings. The awesome Skaha Bluffs is our local crag and the Cascade, Coast, Cariboo, Monashee, Valhalla and Selkirk Ranges are all in our backyard. The Okanagan Section provides opportunities for a wide variety of activities, including rock climbing, ice and alpine climbing, hiking, mountain biking, nordic and telemark skiing, ski mountaineering and snowshoeing.

The Columbia Mountains Section of the ACC is based in Revelstoke and includes the surrounding mountain areas of the Caribou, Monashee, Selkirk and Purcell Ranges. The section was the 24th regional section of the ACC, added in 2018. The section is active in the mountain biking, alpine climbing, rock climbing, hiking, backpacking and backcountry skiing that the area is known for.

The ACC Rocky Mountain Section enjoys a home close to one of the most spectacular natural playgrounds in the world – the Canadian Rocky Mountains. With the Canadian Rockies at our back door, more than 1200 members of the Rocky Mountain Section (as of August 2017) participate in a wide range of mountain activities all year round. Looking for climbing partners? Interested in updates on the latest avalanche technology? Do you want to learn more about first aid, local fauna or interesting areas to climb or ski? Or do you just want to get together with a bunch of fun people and drink beer while talking about climbing and skiing? Then our socials are for you!
We have slide shows or presentations most months except during the summer, when we’re too busy climbing. They are usually in the evenings, often on Tuesday nights. We have pub nights whenever we feel like it. We also have climbing socials where we do some laps at Elevation Place Climbing Gym, and then head out to a local pub afterwards to socialize.
Section volunteers lead weekday and weekend trips throughout the year: hiking, scrambling, rock climbing, mountaineering, ice climbing, alpine ski touring, cross-country skiing. All of our trips are free for members, with the exception of overnight or multi-day trips with paid accommodation. The section also organizes 2 or 3 week-long lodge-based ski trips, priced on a break-even basis and led by an experienced trip coordinator. We also coordinate occasional international trips to places such as Kyrgyzstan, Chamonix, and Patagonia.
We offer many free or highly subsidized training courses to our members, including: Avalanche Safety, First Aid, Rock Rescue, Climbing Skills, Mountain Weather, Map and Compass, Crevasse Rescue, etc. In addition to formal training courses, our section organizes two programs each year designed to enhance your mountain skills:

The ACC Jasper/Hinton Section serves members from all over west central and northern Alberta and British Columbia. Most of the section activities take place in and around Jasper National Park from the eastern slopes of the Alberta Rockies to the Mt. Robson area, and south to the David Thompson area.

The Calgary Section is a large section of over 1200 members involved in all facets of summer and winter mountaineering in the Canadian Rockies. An active and motivated group, the Section keeps a close eye on local and regional access and environment issues, primarily focussed on the Bow Valley, the National Mountain Parks, and Kananaskis Country. As well, the Section library contains over 400 volumes including fiction, expedition journals, guidebooks and instructional guides.

Although the Central Alberta Section is based out of Red Deer, it has members in many outlying Central Alberta communities – some as far away as Lloydminster and Wainwright. Members are offered opportunities to participate in outdoor activities together no matter where they live.

MEETING AND SOCIALS
Monthly meetings to discuss upcoming trips, plan additional trips, respond to questions and discuss the needs of the club are held September thru June on the first Tuesday of the month at the Collicutt Centre in Red Deer. The meetings are open to all. The Section newsletter, The Runout, is distributed quarterly to keep members updated on the latest happenings in the Central Alberta Section as well as news from other sections and the national club.
TRIP SCHEDULE
During the summer season the Section offers rock climbing, alpine climbing, scrambling, hiking and backpacking trips. During the winter season the Section provides backcountry skiing and ice climbing. Trips are open to all Section members. The trip schedules (available on the Section Facebook or printed in its newsletters) outline Section activities throughout the year. HUTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
Annual skill reviews for both summer and winter activities are also held. These skill reviews (rock in the summer/ice in the winter) provide a good start to the season. These events are designed for review purposes as well as an introduction for the novice. The section tries to cover various types of outdoor activities but the emphasis is mainly on scrambles, rock climbs, ice climbs, and mountaineering trips. The Edmonton Section offers a wide variety of winter and summer mountain activities for both the novice and experienced mountaineer, including hiking, backpacking, scrambling, mountaineering, rock climbing, ice climbing, cross-country skiing or ski touring, and indoor climbing, as well as leadership training and a full trip schedule.
The Section has a very active Environment Committee to help protect the mountain environment we all enjoy and always welcomes new members. The Edmonton Section is a steward of the Whitehorse Wildland Park (Cardinal Divide Natural Area), a 65 sq km area bordering Jasper National Park in the northern front ranges of the Rockies.

Monthly meetings featuring a slide show and guest speaker are held on the third Tuesday of every month (except July, August and December). Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings to find out more about the Club, meet new people, and find climbing and skiing partners.
The section conducts two socials each year. The first is a Section BBQ held in June and the second is a Photo Contest / Wine & Cheese held in November. The Section BBQ is the final club event before the summer break and always proves to be a great place for planning some summer adventure. The Photo Contest / Wine & Cheese is a cherished opportunity to share our adventures through photos and maybe win a prize in the process.
A special bonus for Edmonton Section members are “Club Nights at the Urban Uprising Climbing Complex.” Club Nights are held 1-2 Sunday evenings per month, September though April. Club Nights are free for current members of the Edmonton Section. Members also enjoy special rates at local climbing gyms.
Trips are the heart and soul of the club. The section publishes a summary of all section trips, courses, and camps in our Summer and Winter schedules in The Breeze newsletter and on the Section website. The offerings any given year depend on members’ needs and the availability of volunteer leaders. Section trips are volunteer led, so participants must be self-sufficient. The trip leader will let participants know the equipment and skills required for a trip.
HUTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
The Section offers many opportunities for both the novice and experienced mountaineer to learn something new. Two special courses for novices, “Winter in the Mountains”, and “Summer in the Mountains” are held in the winter and spring of each year. Courses on avalanche safety, navigation, glacier travel, wilderness first aid, climbing and mountaineering are available for all members to improve their skills. Special training weekends for trip leaders cover ski touring, ice climbing or mountaineering, and cover general leadership skills and group management.
Within the section, members can acquire new skills through courses and trips. Beginners can learn the basics of mountaineering, mountain travel, and safety, through our Summer and Winter in the Mountain courses which include weekday evening lectures and weekend practical training. Regular courses are held on more advanced topics, such as rescue, avalanche, first-aid, rock, ice, alpine & ski leadership and more. The skills developed in these programs and through your participation in section trips will enable you to organize, lead, and enjoy personal or section trips and camps.

Originally formed in 1921, the Saskatchewan Section closed in 1946 and was re-formed in 1995. The Section goal is to fill the alpine needs of enthusiasts living hours away from anything remotely vertical.

The Great Plains section, formed in May 2018, is based in Regina, SK. We are an active group of people who love to have fun outdoors, no matter what the activity. Since the topography of Saskatchewan doesn’t support alpine activities very well, we travel the globe (well, more likely a 12 hour driving radius) to reach our playgrounds. Some of us ski, some climb rock and ice, some ascend mountains, some canoe and kayak and some hike the beautiful paths that nature has created.
We want to get more Saskatchewan people outdoors. Our aim is to run a number of trips each year, mentor new members, provide skills training and support for leaders and to have a TON of fun while doing it all. If you’d like to join us, we’d love to have you. We promise, it will be the most fun you’ll ever have “…at the 100th meridian, where the Great Plains begin…” (Thanks Gord Downie for the use of this amazing quote)

The Manitoba Section was created in 1907, following the meeting that formed the ACC in Winnipeg in 1906. Initially, the Section coordinated Manitoban extensive exploratory mountaineering in Western Canada. The francophone Saint-Boniface Section was founded in 1993, offering rock and ice climbing, hiking and mountaineering in Manitoba. The safe practice of these activities and the protection of different climbing sites are a priority. In addition, the Section offers various programs and services designed to empower people in the practice of outdoor activities in the mountains.

TRIP SCHEDULE
From time to time, the Section organizes climbing excursions in the Whiteshell and Lake of the Woods to allow our members to practice cliff climbing techniques. Every summer, the Club offers a week of hiking and exploration in the Rocky Mountains. A Calendar is posted on the Section website.
HUTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
The Section’s interior climbing wall, located in École Précieux-Sang gymnasium, is open Tuesdays and Fridays from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m (except July and August). The 7 meter high climbing structure has a variety of climbing features, including a 6 meter long roof. Climbers have a choice between top roping and lead climbing. During the summer months the Section’s 20-meter climbing tower is available for wall climbing. Top roping, lead climbing and dry tooling are only a few of the options available on this very versatile climbing structure. In the winter, the Section’s three-sided permanent ice tower offers a variety of ice climbing in varying degrees of difficulty. The ice tower is open every Saturday and Sunday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (weather permitting). Floodlights make evening climbing enjoyable. The season usually starts at the end of December and lasts to the end of March. A limited amount of ice climbing equipment is available (on a share basis) free of charge.

The Thunder Bay Section actively promotes the city and region as a climbing destination with unique benefits. Hundreds of rock and ice routes are established in the area, most have short approaches, and there are no avalanches to spoil the day! With about 150 members, the Section is active in running events and projects, new route development, upgrading anchors on established climbs, publishing guidebooks, building a library of resources, and promoting climbing as a life-style activity in the local education system.

The Section hosts the annual “Best of the Banff Festival of Mountain Films”. With an ideal venue at the community auditorium, the “film fest” has become a record-breaking, don’t-miss event. The ACC website has channeled many enquiries about climbing in the Thunder Bay area to the Section, and each season the Section looks forward to helping visitors discover the endless possibilities for adventure in the area. Many climbers hosted by the ACC in Thunder Bay have returned home with new friendships and plans to return to the area.

The Section demonstrates its commitment to the region’s resources through stewardship of local crags, participation in Project Peregrine, and establishment of a cache of rescue gear, “Project OBEEK”, in the Orient Bay area.

Despite being situated thousands of kilometres from the nearest “real” mountains, the Toronto Section has been flourishing for most of the last eighty years. In the 1920s and early ’30s, a small group of ACC members, who were referred to as the Toronto Committee, made their annual pilgrimage to Western Canada for the challenge and fulfillment of finding their way up a mountain. By 1933, however, this group had disbanded. The early 1950s again saw Toronto-based members banding together for mutual benefit. The Section was officially re-launched on September 23, 1957, with a motion by the National Club incorporating the Section into the ACC.

TRIP SCHEDULE
Section members rock climb, in traditional and sport styles, at areas largely discovered and/or developed by ACC members, such as Rattlesnake Point, Lionshead, Buffalo Crag, Kelso and Mount Nemo, all located on the Niagara Escarpment west of Toronto, and Bon Echo, 4 hours northeast of Toronto. Toronto Section members ice climb at areas such as Eagles Nest, Fish Lake, Schooner Lake and Bow Lake.

HUTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
In the early 1960s, the Section built the Bon Echo Hut to meet the need to stay overnight at the nearest climbing area. The Bon Echo Hut continues to this day as one of the main activities of the Toronto Section, and includes a Section-run boat service to the Hut and to the water-accessed base of the climbs.
Mountaineering is supported through the participation of members in national camps, organizing Section camps in the mountains of Western and Northern Canada, coordinated weekend backcountry ski, snowshoe, hiking, and mountain climbing trips to areas north of Toronto and in the Adirondack Mountains, and organizing mountaineering skills workshops and courses.
The Section also has an Access Committee, whose goal is to work with all stakeholders: private land owners, governmental regulatory bodies, and members of the local climbing community; to facilitate open access to, and responsible use of, local climbing areas.

The Ottawa Section has approximately 425 members and growing. The nearby Gatineau Hills are the Section’s main playground, offering some great rock and ice climbing, hiking and skiing.

Throughout the year a wide range of hiking- and climbing-related courses are offered, including introductory courses for those wanting to try rock and ice climbing. An Events Calendar is posted on the Section’s website.
HUTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
The Section’s volunteer climbing and hiking leaders organize local trips to the Eardley Escarpment in the Gatineaus, as well as weekend trips to the Adirondacks, the Laurentians and to the Toronto Section cabin at Bon Echo. Less frequent trips are made to the Shawanagunks in New York State and to the White Mountains in New Hampshire.
Each summer the Section also organizes summer camps in the Rocky and Selkirk mountains, based in the ACC’s mountain huts. These include general camps suited to both hikers and climbers, as well as mountaineering camps.
Training courses are offered throughout the year.

The francophone Outaouais Section offers a wide range of activities including rock climbing, hiking, snowshoeing, cross country and telemark skiing. The Section is run by its members and activities are organized on a voluntary basis.
The Outaouais Section is for people who have a sense of adventure and who would like to practice their favourite outdoor activities with like-minded people.

The Section offers activities for all tastes and levels. The only prerequisite is a love of the outdoors and a desire for physical fitness! Activities take place primarily in the beautiful Outaouais region, which includes Gatineau Park. In addition to single day activities, the section also offers weekends in nearby provincial and national parks, as well as trips to the Adirondacks and elsewhere in Canada and the United States.

The Montréal Section has about 500 members, both French and English speaking, who share a common passion for the outdoors. The Section’s goal is to unite outdoor enthusiasts in Quebec who share a common interest for mountain activities.The Section is committed to help promote environmentally friendly behaviors by investing in eco-funds, funding other eco-organizations and organizing eco-awareness activities. It also actively assists other associations with the maintenance of trails and climbing areas and also on the negotiation front ensuring access to them and opening new ones.
The Section hosts social events in pubs, annual BBQ at our Keene Hut, slide show presentations and much more.

HUTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
The Montréal Section owns 105 acres of meadow and woodlands in the Adirondack Forest Preserve in New York State. The property, known as Keene Farm, has a large two-storey log cabin which accommodates up to 35 people. It is open year round with a wood stove and propane gas heating and cooking.
The Section organizes outdoor activities and courses to improve technical, safety and leadership skills in the Montréal area and the mountain ranges of Quebec, New York, Vermont and New Hampshire.

The Mission of the Newfoundland & Labrador Section is to explore, develop, and maintain climbing areas in Newfoundland as well as promote safe climbing and environmental awareness through communication, education, and community events.
The Section holds Executive committee meetings once/month and an Annual General Meeting. The Section holds numerous events each year for people to try climbing outside, experience new aspects of climbing, or learn the skills needed to climb safely. The Section can also help members find partners or groups of people to climb with locally.

Newfoundland hasn’t earned the nickname “The Rock” without good reason. All around the island are different rock formations, from sandstone and conglomerate sea cliffs on the Avalon Peninsula to bullet hard granite on the south coast and limestone cliffs and caves in the west. There is huge potential for climbing in Newfoundland but hardly any of it has been explored and developed.
