Have you started heading out on bigger climbs and are beginning to feel confident enough to take friends out, but lack the knowledge to get out of situations if things go south?

Our Rock Rescue Climbing course is our fourth and final level of four climbing courses that build your confidence to climb trad multi-pitches outside. The Rock Rescue Course provides a basic understanding of improvised rock rescue techniques so you can deal with cliff-side emergencies. This will include escaping the belay, emergency lowers, tandem rappels and more.

No matter your background, our Rock Rescue Climbing course will teach you the required skills. Many experienced climbers will tell you that when it comes to safety, it is important to get into the right habits from day one. Taking one of these course will ensure just that. And who better to teach you than long time Bow Valley climber Kris Irwin.

Rock Climbing Hazards

  • Rockfall
    • Rockfall can be caused by natural forces, or by people travelling through the terrain (Climbing/Scrambling/Hiking) 

What are the risks

    • Impact from a falling rock can result in injury or death and can also damage equipment such as ropes.

Hazard Mitigation

    • Our ACMG certified guides have experience and training to manage this risk
    • Your guide will ask you to put on a helmet when in the mountains
  • Terrain
    • Cornices
    • Crevasses
    • Trees, tree wells, and tree stumps
    • Creeks
    • Rocks and Boulders
    • Variable and difficult walking terrain
    • Impact or collision with other persons or objects
    • Encounters with domestic or wild animals
    • Contact with poisonous flora or fauna
    • Loss of balance or control
    • Slips, trips, and falls

Hazard Mitigation

    • Our ACMG certified guides have experience and training to manage this risk
    • Radios and/or other communication devices
  • Falls and belaying
    • Rock climbing present the risk of falling from the wall causing the climber to collide with the wall or ground 
    • There is also the risk of a belay failure, which can contribute to a ground fall

Hazard Mitigation

    • Your guide will review best belay practices with you or will control the belay
  • Communication, rescue, and medical treatment
    • Communication can be difficult and in the event of an accident rescue and treatment may not be available
    • Adverse weather may also delay the arrival of treatment or transportation out of the field,
    • Alpine weather conditions can be extreme and change rapidly without warning making travel by helicopter
    • If an injury occurs in challenging terrain movement to an evacuation point may be slow

    • Slips trips and falls indoor or outdoor
    • Infectious disease contracted via direct or indirect contact, including but not limited to influenza or Covid-19

    • Negligence of the guide Including failure to to take reasonable steps to safeguard or protect you from or warn you of risk, dangers, hazards, oh participating in ACC activities

Your “classroom” could be anywhere from the front range crags in Kananaskis all the way through to the “back of the lake” crags at Lake Louise. The climbing areas will be determined by your guide(s) based on a number of factors i.e. weather, distance, group size and dynamics.

A two-day course to provide a basic understanding of improvised rock rescue techniques so you can deal with simple cliff-side emergencies. Techniques to be covered on day one include escaping the belay, emergency lowers, tandem rappels, a simple 3:1 raising system and releasing an auto device. Day two will provide more complicated concepts including knot passes and rope ascension as well as scenarios to apply the new skills. Course content can be adapted to the experience level of the group.

Saturday:

  • Meet in parking at 8:00 am (MST). Location will be emailed to you one week before the course start date. Here, the group will do introductions , review the plan for the day, go over equipment, the head up to the crag of the day!
  • At the crag, the guide will first review hazards, safety, and basic climbing skills
  • Learn rock rescue techniques

Sunday:

  • Meet in parking at 8:00 am (MST). Location will be decided and communicated on day 1.
  • Once up at the crag, the group will first review lessons from previous day before continuing to practice rescue techniques.

Intermediate

This camp is designed for those with previous sport climbing and/or trad experience. You should have a basic understanding of rope systems for multipitches but you do not need to be an advanced climber. Your climbing grade does not matter for this course.

Food

To keep the cost of this course as low as possible for participants, food will not be provided as part of the course. So please brink along your peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (or favoured alternative), a packed lunch and some snacks for both days.

Accommodation

If you are traveling from out of town we recommend staying in Canmore. There are various hostels and hotels to choose from including our very own clubhouse with hostel style accommodation. Located on a high bench overlooking the Three Sisters, Ha Ling and Mount Rundle, our purpose built hostel is the perfect place to relax while completing your course.

Guiding

This camp will ensure a maximum 6:1 participant to guide ratio to ensure you get sufficient one-on-one coaching. Our guides know the Bow Valley inside out and will be able to recommend future routes and crags to further your skills.

KRIS IRWIN

Kris is an ACMG Alpine Guide and lives in Banff with his wife Ellen and their daughters Aria and Annie. He is certified to lead all types of rock, ice, and mountain climbs and has been climbing in the mountains at home and abroad since 2004. Although he feels most at home on the classic ice climbs in the Rockies he has also made several first ascents in Alaska in the past few years. Kris is one of the most active waterfall ice climbing guides in the winter and in the summer can be seen leading guests throughout the Rockies, Bugaboos and Rogers Pass. An excellent instructor and personable guide, Kris always gets rave reviews from his guests
