Let us Help you Escape the Crowds on this Off-Trail, Floatplane-Accessed Backpacking Adventure

Attention backcountry hiking, photography and geology enthusiasts! We’re planning a hiking trip to Mt. Edziza Provincial Park in northern British Columbia for summer 2019. Check out our photo gallery below to see why we’re so excited about this trip!

If the wild landscapes in Mt. Edziza Provincial Park were more accessible, they would see thousands of visitors snapping Instagram shots every year. As it is, very few groups make it in to the area due to the difficulty of logistics and access. Be prepared to see very few (if any) other groups.

This floatplane-accessed trek through remote Mt. Edziza Provincial park is a chance to explore one of Canada’s remote wilderness areas. We take care of all of the vehicle rental, the flights into and out of the park, the guides and navigation, and the food. The majority of Mt. Edziza Provincial Park is only accessible by floatplane.

Trek with us through true Canadian wilderness in the summer of 2019!

Camp Objectives

Our traverse will start at Buckley Lake, cross the Mt. Edziza plateau past the main volcanic complex in the park, and finish at Mowdade lake. Your flights in and out of the park will give you an aerial view of the scenery.

You can expect to see dramatic volcanic cones and landscapes, the ice-covered Mt. Edziza; take in the views from the top of spectacular Eve’s Cone; and catch a glimpse of the rainbow colors of the Spectrum Range. The hike will let you get up close and personal with the volcanic landscapes, and take in the views of this unique region.

The area is rich in natural and cultural history. All of Mt. Edziza Provincial Park is part of the traditional territory of the Tahltan peoples. First Nations in the area have used the obsidian glass found in the park for knives and arrowheads for thousands of years. Mt. Edziza, at 2,787m, is Canada’s second-highest stratovolcano. It’s arguably actually the highest volcano in Canada: Mt. Silverthrone is measured at 2,864m, but the glacier on top means that it’s difficult to calculate the actual height of the mountain. While the main volcano has been dormant for millions of years, more recent eruptions around it have dotted the plateau with numerous perfectly symmetrical cinder cones (like Eve’s Cone, Coffee Crater, and Cocoa Crater).

The trip will start in Terrace, BC. Daily flights are available from Vancouver (WestJet and Air Canada) and Edmonton (Central Mountain Air). Our camp staff will pick you up from the trip meeting location in a comfortable rental vehicle, and drive you north along the Cassiar highway to the Tatogga Lake Resort. From there, you’ll be picked up by an Alpine Air floatplane, and flown into Buckley Lake. Your guide will navigate you across the plateau, around Mt. Edziza, and down to Mowdade Lake.

From there, you’ll be picked up by floatplane and taken back to Dease Lake. Because of unpredictable weather that might delay floatplane access or exit, we’ve planned a fairly relaxed itinerary for the traverse. If all goes well, your group may have an extra day or two to explore the area’s culture and scenery.

Day by Day Adventure Itinerary

Is this Camp For Me?

The trip will be at a moderate pace to allow for photography and potential side trips. Participants will need to be experienced hikers, and have a good grasp of clothing and gear systems. Expect to carry some group gear and food in addition to your personal gear: you will need to be fit enough to carry a 50-60lb pack for several hours each day.
