Build Skills and Ski Bottomless Powder in an All-Female Setting

Join the ACC in Rogers Pass to breathe in the fresh air, strap on your skis and go explore! If you want to build your skills, meet other adventurous women, and learn from female backcountry mentors, the 2019 Marmot Women's Camp at Rogers Pass is the trip for you.

Designed and offered for women exclusively, this unique ski camp provides an opportunity to work on winter skills and gain ski-mountaineering experience in an all-female setting. This camp is traditionally heavy on instruction. Topics on past courses have included glacier travel, whiteout navigation, crevasse rescue, routefinding, track setting, snow stability evaluation, and terrain management. We're in favour of hands-on learning: there will be plenty of opportunity to enjoy the legendary Rogers Pass powder. Food will be sledded into the Wheeler hut and portered into the Asulkan hut, helping you to keep your pack light while you play in the snow.

Build your confidence, meet lifelong ski buddies, and have adventures that you'll be talking about for years to come on our 2019 Marmot Women's Camp!

Camp Objectives

A variety of objectives will keep participants busy for the five-day camp. The first two nights will be spent at the Wheeler hut, enjoying the comfort (and catering options) offered by a short, 20-minute ski from the parking lot. The Wheeler hut accesses plenty of alpine terrain and tree skiing to take advantage of a variety of snow condtions. The next two nights will be at the spectacular Asulkan hut. From your perch above the headwall, you have an unparalleled view back down the valley and over to classic Rogers Pass objectives.

Rogers Pass offers literally hundreds of objectives for beginner through to expert skiers. Our guides will pick the right destinations and objectives for the group based on weather, conditions and participant input.

The Wheeler Hut offers out-of-the-door access to both the Asulkan and Illecillewaet drainages which are some of the best zones at Rogers Pass. Classic objectives and lines from the hut include: Mushroom People, Dome Glacier, Rampart Bowl, Lily Glacier, Youngs Peak, Perley Rock and the 7 Steps of Paradise.

The Asulkan Cabin is located at the head of the Asulkan Valley at Rogers Pass in Glacier National Park, and has a roughly 3-5 hour approach (potentially longer with fresh snow). Classic objectives from the hut include The Seven Steps of Paradise, Paradise, Asulkan Pass, Pterodactyl, Sapphire Col and the Dome Glacier.

The nearby Ursus drainage also offers a great range of moderate objectives and lines including: Grizzly Shoulder, Puff Daddy, Balu Peak, Video Peak, Ursus Trees, Hourglass and Teddy Bear Trees.

Day by Day Adventure Itinerary
  • Day 1: Meet at 7am PST at the Rogers Pass Visitor Centre where those who need to can pick up their permits and you will get an orientation from the guide and/or Parks Canada staff on the area and how the winter permit system works. You will then likely perform a brief review/practice of companion rescue techniques and group gear before heading up the Ursus Valley for one of the many classic lines on offer. At the end of the day you will make the short drive and skin up to the cosy Wheeler Hut where you will receive a hut orientation and enjoy a sociable and delicious group meal before deciding on the next day's objectives.
  • Day 2: After a hearty breakfast, you'll head out the door to explore the terrain around the Wheeler Hut. Mushroom People, the Dome Glacier, and the Vaux Moraines are just a few of the possible lines you can access. After skiing, you'll all pitch in to help out with dinner, and discuss your plans for the next day.
  • Day 3: Head to the Asulkan hut. The trip itself is about a 3-5 hour ski. Depending on your group's ability and ambition, there are a few fun detours that you could take to make it to the hut (via Lookout Col, for example). Once at the hut, you'll drop your bags. If time permits, you might get in a short ski on some of the amazing alpine terrain surrounding the hut.
  • Day 4: If conditions cooperate, you may have a crack at one of the big alpine objectives accessible from the Asulkan Hut. Ski Young's Peak via the Seven Steps of Paradise, and head back to the cozy Asulkan Hut for dinner.
  • Day 5: You will enjoy a fifth and final day of Rogers Pass powder before returning to your vehicles and debriefing with your guide. We aim to try finish the day around 5pm at the latest to give people time to return home that night.

Is this Camp For Me?
This camp is designed for women with some backcountry skiing experience. You must have a good level of fitness and be comfortable skiing the equivalent of blue/intermediate and black/advanced ski runs at downhill ski areas in variable conditions (powder, crust, icy etc.) We require participants to have a good level of fitness and familiarity with touring equipment and avalanche transceivers. Additionally, you must be able to ski in deep powder with a 13-17kg (30-40lb) pack for several hours. Participants will be expected to share in carrying group gear and their own lunch while on the camp.

If you have any concerns about your suitability for this camp please contact the office before registering.

Food, Accommodation and Guiding

Evenings will be spent enjoying great food, socializing in cozy hut surroundings and resetting for the next day’s skiing. Food supplies will be carried in by porter to reduce pack weights and increase the quality and enjoyment of skiing. Our food is pre-prepared by Bow Valley cooks who specialize in creating meals for backcountry adventures. Check out our sample menu for full details of catering on ACC Adventures camps and courses.

Guests on this camp will be staying at the ACC's Wheeler and Asulkan Huts in the heart of the pass. This perfect location provides convenient access to many great ski lines in the area and translates to less driving time each day and more time spent exploring classic lines.

In keeping with the mission of the camp, our ACMG certified ski or full mountain guides are all women! As with all our guides they will ensure your adventure is both safe and enjoyable as well as being open to answering questions about the region as well as everything from ski technique to gear. The maximum ratio of guides to participants will be 5:1 to ensure participants can travel at a pace which is right for them and have the chance to ask questions.

She moved to Canada with her family in 1998 and fell in love with the mountains of Western Canada. Erica began her ski career as a Pro Ski Patroller at Lake Louise Ski Resort. Wanting to share her passion for the mountains with other people led her to a career in guiding. These days Erica splits her time between guiding, playing in the mountains with friends, and hanging out with her daughter Grace. Erica has worked for a number of different guiding operations throughout the ranges of Western Canada. She loves guiding because she gets to spend time in beautiful places but also because of the people she meets and the experiences she gets to share with them.
