6-Pass Traverse 2018

A Rockies classic: back by popular demand!

The classic Six Pass Route south of Jasper is a full-value ski traverse that includes skis-off scrambles, descents to valley bottom, and the potential to ski laps on nice open slopes. This trip provides relatively mellow terrain appropriate for heavier packs, and has a true wilderness feel. While a popular tourist area in the summer, Maligne Lake feels much more remote in the winter.

We’ll start the traverse by shuttling the ever-important end-of-route car to the Maligne Lake Parking area before returning to the trailhead at Poboktan Creek (Sunwapta Warden Station/Mile 45). We start the trip by skiing up Poboktan Creek, and camping just south of Elusive Pass. The route trends generally north west, dipping in and out of treeline, for the length of the traverse before descending down to Maligne Lake. Along the way, the route will cross six picturesque passes, climb up moderate terrain on southern slopes, and descends northerly faces to valley bottom..

Cross 6 Picturesque Passes

Each day will start with a delicious and hearty breakfast to give you the energy to pack up, shoulder your pack, and get on with the day’s objective. Depending on the group, there may be opportunities for some ski mountaineering, or extra laps on good ski terrain. With input from the participants, your guides and camp managers will be in charge of the day to day itinerary. Safety and group travel are paramount, with guides having final say.

Each evening will be spent outside in a dug out kitchen enjoying great food, telling tall tales wrapped in your down jackets and recuperating for the next day’s adventures. Filling a hot water bottle before slipping into your tent and sleeping bag will guarantee a good night’s rest.

Last year, we ran this as a ladies’ traverse. We had so many men inquiring about the trip that we decided to bring it back and open it up to everybody. Despite the questionable avalanche conditions last year, good times were had by all. We expect this year’s trip to be just as fun. Make sure to nab your spot early: spaces are limited!

Level of Difficulty:

This camp is designed for people with at least moderate backcountry skiing experience. You must have a good level of fitness and be comfortable skiing the equivalent of blue/intermediate and black/advanced runs at downhill ski areas. Additionally, you must be able to ski while carrying a 22 – 27kg (50-60lb) pack for several hours. Participants will be expected to share in carrying group gear/food and their own lunch while on the camp. Previous winter camping skills will be handy, but not essential, as the guide and manager will coach and teach. If you have never camped in the winter but would like to learn how, this might be the camp for you.
