A Legendary Backcountry Powder Destination

Rogers Pass is one of the undoubted capitals of North American ski touring. The sheer amount of powder, vertical and terrain types makes it a must-do destination for those with prior backcountry experience looking to push it to the next level.

Always wanted to ski this legendary destination but feeling intimated by the big mountain terrain? Or perhaps you are overwhelmed by the sheer number of zones and routes on offer? Starting your Rogers Pass career with a guided ACC trip is the best way to get to know the region, learn how to manage its unique risks and of course, ski the fantastic powder on offer.

Due to popular demand, this year we will be running TWO powder camps to Rogers Pass! Our Wheeler Hut edition is suited to those with intermediate backcountry skiing experience who are relatively new to the Pass. For more advanced backcountry skiers and/or those who have visited the Pass before, our Asulkan Edition, offers you the chance to stay higher each night and tackle some more challenging objectives.

Let us take care of the food, accommodation and guiding arrangements and join us on this true ACC Adventure this winter!

Camp Objectives

Rogers Pass offers literally hundreds of objectives from beginner through to expert skiers. With 8 major areas to explore there is enough skiing here to last you a lifetime! Our guides will pick the right destinations and objectives for the group based on weather, conditions and participant input.

The Wheeler Hut offers out-of-the-door access to both the Asulkan and Illecillewaet drainages which are some of the best zones at Rogers Pass. Classic objectives and lines from the hut include: Mushroom People, Dome Glacier, Rampart Bowl, Lily Glacier, Youngs Peak, Perley Rock and the 7 Steps of Paradise.

The nearby Ursus drainage also offers a great range of moderate objectives and lines including: Grizzly Shoulder, Puff Daddy, Balu Peak, Video Peak, Ursus Trees, Hourglass and Teddy Bear Trees.
Day by Day Adventure Itinerary
  •
  • Day 1: Meet at 7am PST at the Rogers Pass Visitor Centre where those who need to can pick up their permits and you will get an orientation from the guide and/or Parks Canada staff on the area and how the winter permit system works. You will then likely perform a brief review/practice of companion rescue techniques and group gear before heading up the Ursus Valley for one of the many classic lines on offer. At the end of the day you will make the short drive and skin up to the cosy Wheeler Hut where you will receive a hut orientation and enjoy a sociable and delicious group meal before deciding on the next day's objectives.
  • Days 2-4: Each morning will see the group setting off early for the huge variety of classic objectives in the Pass. Our guides will select which zones and lines to visit based on conditions, weather and group input. You can guarantee to visit a good range of zones and valleys as well as different styles of skiing with at least one day spent up the Asulkan and/or Illecillewaet drainages.
  • Day 5: You will enjoy a fifth and final day of Rogers Pass powder before returning to your vehicles and debriefing with your guide. We aim to try finish the day around 5pm at the latest to give people time to return home that night.

Is this Camp For Me?
Beginner - Intermediate
This camp is designed for skiers with a prior knowledge of backcountry skiing but is designed to be more entry-level than our Rogers Pass Powder - Asulkan edition. Perhaps you have some experience backcountry skiing in your local area but want the peace of mind and learning opportunities of being with a guide for your first time at the Pass.

We require participants to have a good level of fitness, confident downhill ski abilities in variable snow conditions and familiarity with equipment and avalanche transceivers. Participants should be able to ski the equivalent of blue runs in backcountry conditions with a daypack.
Food, Accommodation and Guiding

Food

Evenings will be spent enjoying great food, socializing in cozy hut surroundings and resetting for the next day’s skiing. Food supplies will be carried in by porter to reduce pack weights and increase the quality and enjoyment of skiing. Our food is pre-prepared by Bow Valley cooks who specialize in creating meals for backcountry adventures. There'll be no dehydrated stuff here! The proximity of the hut and our use of porters allows us to carry in fresh and frozen meals and ingredients!

Accommodation

Guests on this camp will be staying at the ACC's Wheeler Hut in the heart of the pass. This perfect location provides convenient access to many great ski lines in the area and translates to less driving time each day and more time spent exploring classic lines. With room for 24 people the communal and sleeping areas are spacious and the hut features a propane system which provides the cooking and lighting, with two wood stoves for heating.

Guiding

Our ACMG certified ski or full mountain guides will ensure your adventure is both safe and enjoyable. Our guides will be welcome to answering questions about the region as well as everything from ski technique to gear. The maximum ratio of guides and experienced ACC amateur leaders to participants will be 5:1 to ensure participants can travel at a pace which is right for them and have the chance to ask questions.

  • I give the camp 4 out of 4 for overall camp experience!
  • Highlight of the camp was the powder skiing and excellent guiding.
  • The staff were very patient with all my questions, and I feel that I learnt a lot.
  • I really liked the group, everyone was nice and friendly and the location was beautiful.

Your Guides

Doug Latimer

Doug has 20 years of guiding experience behind him as an ACMG ski guide and an ACMG apprentice rock guide. As well as his private guiding he has spent a number of years working for the UoC where he taught a range of instructional programs in avalanche training, crevasse rescue and backcountry ski and ski mountaineering. He also somehow finds time to run a multimedia production company! In 2019, we are excited to announce Doug will be joining us as our on-staff winter guide; the perfect guy to take care of our Intro To, avalanche safety and other ski courses.
