Introduction to Navigation

Learn to navigate with the ACC!

This hands-on course will cover the fundamentals of navigation. Based out of the Canmore clubhouse, classroom sections will include the fundamentals of navigation, map reading, map and compass navigation, whiteout navigation, trip planning, and the use of GPS devices. Hands-on skills exercises will let you practice and be comfortable with your new skills.

Level of Difficulty

No experience is necessary for this course: this is a Canmore-based theory course. Because it is designed for winter backcountry travelers, some backcountry experience will help you get the most out of your experience.
