Rick Checkland
Rick Checkland joined The Alpine Club of Canada in 1968 after
spending five years as a member of the Edmonton section junior group. He
was soon involved in the section schools, an involvement which has
continued for 49 years. As lead instructor, the Summer in the
Mountains and Winter in the Mountains courses have been a source of
enjoyment, learning, and meeting people for Rick. While his children
were young Rick led summer family camps to Elizabeth Parker, Stanley
Mitchell and other locations. These week-long trips introduced many kids
to the mountains and remain some of Rick’s fondest memories. Over the
years he has led both climbing and skiing trips. His Involvement with
the section executive has included Breeze editor, climbing chair, and
chairman.
Rick Checkland was awarded the Silver Rope for Leadership Award in 2016 and the Distinguished Service Award in 1990.
