Greatest Needs

Strengthening your national alpine club for generations to come

The Greatest Needs Fund is a permanent legacy of the ACC. This fund has been in place for over 15 years, and has grown considerably over that time through generous donations and bequests from members who included the ACC in their estate planning. Interest income is used annually to support strategic priorities and projects. Funding distributed through grants approved by the ACC Board of Directors.

Philippe Delesalle Fund

Help disadvantaged Youth experience Canada's Mountains

The Philippe Delesalle Fund was created to support disadvantaged children and youth who would otherwise have limited opportunities to experience the mountains, mountain life and mountain culture. Each year, the proceeds of this fund will be used to finance underprivileged individuals attending a youth-specific immersive mountaineering camp or related program.

Philippe Delesalle was a father, mountain lover, adventurer and architect who resided in Banff until his passing in 2020.

Your contribution will increase the impact of the Philippe Delesalle Fund.

Facilities Fund

Help maintain the largest network of backcountry huts in North America

The ACC’s hut system is the largest in North America. The huts are used as bases for mountain recreation and as emergency refuges for all mountain travellers. They are a symbol of the ACC and an enormous part of our Club’s past, present and future. Operating and maintaining this hut system is a large undertaking physically, logistically and financially.

Your contribution to the Facilities Fund will be used to facilitate renovations to the Club’s national level huts in British Columbia and Alberta and the ACC Clubhouse in Canmore.

Support Tuition-free science and adventure learning for young women in Canada

The Girls On Ice Canada (GOIC) Fund supports a wilderness program for Canadian high school girls operated under the auspices of the ACC. Each summer, girls from diverse communities and backgrounds across Canada are chosen for a tuition-free, 12-day science-immersion expedition led by female scientists, mountain guides and artists.

The program interweaves science, art and adventure to inspire leadership, curiosity and confidence in its young participants and supports the development of a new generation of volunteer leaders. Donations to the Fund will support the ACC’s vision to grow the GOIC program across Canada.

Hišimy̓awiƛ Fund

HELP MAINTAIN AND UPGRADE VANCOUVER ISLAND'S MOUNTAIN HUT

This hut, on 5040 Peak, was the first ACC hut named by local First Nations. The name means "Gather Together." Opened in 2019, it is the only public, year-round, alpine hut on Vancouver Island. After being opened for just over one year, we had to close because of provincial COVID-19 restrictions. As soon as we are able to open, we will be back up and running and ready to welcome guests once again.

In the meantime please consider supporting us to

  1. Stabilize the power supply by increasing solar capacity to allow to keep operating through the winter months
  2. Provide ongoing maintenance as needed.
For further information about the hut, go see the ACC Vancouver Island Section website or if you have questions, email [email protected].

Bev Bendell Library Conservation Fund

PRESERVE THE HISTORY OF THE ACC

The Bev Bendell Library Conservation Fund is committed to the growth and enhancement of the Club’s library collection.

Long-time member and A.O. Wheeler Legacy Award recipient, Bev Bendell donated $100,000 to the Club in 2007. Since Bev was a professional librarian and also the Club’s volunteer librarian for several years, the donation was used to create a permanent library fund. This fund is administered by the Mountain Culture Committee, who use the annual investment income from the fund to purchase books for the ACC library, restore older library books, publish new books and other library-related projects. The library has been stored at the Whyte since 1971, except for a period 2010-2015).
